HOW TO CLEAN YOUR SHOES

There’s something special about a fresh pair of shoes right out of the box. From that new shoe smell to the unblemished look—we all love a brand new pair. Of course the more you wear your favorite pair, you have to understand that a little dirt or grime will show up over time.  Or if you’re unlucky, you’ll accidentally step in mud—or something worse!  And if we’re talking about kids—all bets are off when it comes to keeping anything they wear pristine.

Fortunately, we have some tips to help keep your Skechers in the best shape possible. With proper care you can extend the life and look of your favorite pair.

A FEW NOTES BEFORE WE BEGIN…
Never machine wash light-up shoes—or any shoes that include any form of electronics. The batteries and wires don’t like being fully submerged in water!  For regular non-leather sneakers, first try to hand wash the shoes with cold water using a damp cloth with a mild detergent.

NYLON / MESH SHOES
Most non-leather casual shoes can be safely machine washed—if needed—on the gentle cycle and air-dried. Apply a protectant such as Skechers Water Proofer Spray to guard the shoes from water and stains. For shoes with Skechers Memory Foam™ insoles, allow shoes and insoles to air dry for 10 to 12 hours to ensure the insoles are fully dry.

PERFORMANCE SHOES
Machine washing Skechers GOwalk and Skechers GOrun shoes is not recommended. Start by removing excess dirt from the upper and outsole by using a small brush or towel. Then create a soapy mixture by combining warm water and a small amount (a few drops) laundry detergent. Finally, dip the brush or cloth into the soapy mixture. Wipe down the affected area. Apply a small amount of clean, warm water with the brush or cloth and brush/wipe off the excess soap. Allow the shoes to air dry.

LEATHER SHOES
Apply a protectant such as Skechers Water Proofer Spray to guard the shoes from water and stains before wearing in wet conditions. Use a leather cleaning lotion or spray such as Skechers Athletic Cleanser to clean. Apply a leather lotion or oil periodically to keep the leather supple. Do not machine wash leather shoes.

For smooth leather, the shoes will need cleaning and care with shoe creams or polishes. Select a neutral shade or a color nearest to the color of the shoes. Remove all the dust with a damp cloth. Never polish wet shoes.

For scuff resistant leather, remove minor scuffs by simply rubbing them with your hand. The natural oil in your hand restores the original look of the leather. For deeper scrapes and scuffs, use a soft and neutral polish. This process moisturizes and replenishes the natural oil in the leather leaving a shiny coating that will prolong and sustain the wear of the leather.

SUEDE OR NUBUCK SHOES
Apply a protectant such as Skechers Water Proofer Spray to guard the shoes from water and stains before wearing in wet conditions. Do not machine wash suede or nubuck shoes. When shoes are dry, brush with a dry rubber sponge or soft brush to eliminate any clinging dirt. Regular use of a soft brush will keep the nap of the suede free from dust. Stubborn stains should be removed with commercial stain remover suitable for the suede or nubuck material.

LIGHT-UP SHOES
Machine washing light-up shoes is not advised as it may damage the lights. Clean with mild soap, warm water, and a soft cloth.

DRYING WET SHOES
Never put wet shoes in a clothes dryer or near a heat source—this includes anything that would force dry your shoes like a radiator, tumble dryer, fireplace, hairdryer or any other source of direct heat. The heat source may melt or otherwise damage your shoes. Always allow shoes to dry naturally at room temperature. Stuff the shoes with paper and let them air dry. Use a shoetree to help your shoes maintain their shape when not in use.

ELIMINATING ODOR
Apply a deodorizing product such as Skechers Odor Eliminator Spray to keep shoes fresh and odor-free. This spray is specifically formulated to deodorize and freshen Skechers footwear and you can find it on SKECHERS.com here.

Another effective solution to this issue is Baking Soda or Activated Charcoal (which can be found at most pet stores that sell fish tank/aquarium items). Simply put the powder of your choice in a bag, set your shoes on top of the powder, tie up the bag and let the shoes sit in the bag for 2 to 3 days.

How the Width Was Won

Q:  What shoes does Skechers make in a wide width?  What width is considered a wide width?

A:  Shoe size and width seems pretty simple, but it’s a bit more complex than it looks.   There are multiple options, and everyone’s foot is unique.  Luckily, Skechers makes a lot of different size and width options so nearly everyone should be able to find great shoes that fit them.

When we talk about shoe size, we’re really talking about length.  Most shoes available in a medium width are made to fit the average foot of that length – the longer the foot, on average, the wider it is at the wide part of the foot.  Shoes tend to mainly be available in the medium width, which for women is a B width, and for men is a D width.  Skechers also makes shoes in what we call a “Wide Width” on skechers.com and an “EW” width on the shoe box.  For women, the Wide Width or EW option is a D width.  For men, the Wide Width or EW width is a 3E width.

Skechers also makes certain shoes in an even wider width for men – the Extra Wide Width, or on the shoe box the abbreviation is EWW.  That’s a 5E width.  Skechers also makes the Relaxed Fit® collection of shoes, which are made to fit roomier in their medium widths.  For the Relaxed Fit® shoes, a women’s medium will fit a medium B width but also a somewhat wider C width.  For the men, a Relaxed Fit® medium should fit a medium D width or a slightly wider E width.

You may be thinking that this is a lot of alphabet soup, and you’re right.  But those people who want or need a little more room in their shoes know when a shoe fits right, and even those who wear a medium width appreciate the roomy feel of Relaxed Fit® shoes.  Because when you feel relaxed and roomy in your shoes, your whole day just seems to go a little bit better.

SKECHERS Q&A: Weather and Leather

What do you recommend for taking care of your shoes in the rain and the snow?  How do I know what shoes are right for what conditions?

Tim the Shoe Guy says:

When the weather starts turning rainy or snowy, don’t forget to pre-treat your leather, suede and fabric shoes so they keep your feet dry and stay looking their best.

For suede shoes and boots especially, we recommend at least one full application of a suede specific “rain and stain” spray treatment.  Suede can discolor when it gets wet, so pre-treating your new suede boots is highly recommended.

Smooth leather usually repels a light rain, but if it’s pouring, or you’re walking in snow, you’ll want to protect your smooth leather shoes and boots too.  There are many fine leather “rain and stain” treatments available.  Don’t forget to clean your smooth leather after walking in snowy streets, as the salt used to de-ice sidewalks can stain leather shoes.

Fabric and synthetic shoes or boots, especially water-resistant or seam-sealed rain boots, are often ideal for wet weather, but if you’re not sure if your footwear is waterproof, giving them a treatment with a fabric protector like Scotchgard™ is a great idea.  We don’t advise using heavier silicone sealing treatments because it will prevent your footwear from being able to breathe.

When the temperatures drop, we recommend getting boots or shoes with insulation to keep your feet nice and warm, like faux fur-lined shoes or boots with 3M™ Thinsulate™ insulation.  Skechers makes lots of different warm and snuggly shoe and boot options to ensure you make it through the chilly temperatures with warm, dry feet. SKECHERS Answers YOUR Most Frequently Asked Questions!

Have a question about your SKECHERS footwear, but not sure who to ask? See if it’s answered below by SKECHERS’ own Tim the Shoe Guy in this month’s FAQ!

How do I clean my shoes?
Tim the Shoe Guy: I usually advise against washing your shoes in the washing machine – it tends to shorten the life of your shoes, and it may damage leather uppers or fine details. Instead, I advise you to clean leather shoes with a leather cleaning spray or lotion (readily available at most drug stores or shoe stores), and non-leather shoes or parts of shoes with mild soap, warm water and a soft cloth.
Check out all the hottest girls' styles, including Bella Ballerina, at skechers.com!

Why don’t you make Twinkle Toes or Bella Ballerina shoes for women?
TSG:
Sometimes SKECHERS will make a more popular girls’ design in women’s sizes – it’s all based on how much demand there is for a particular style. The Bella Ballerina™ shoes are very new and right now are only available for bigger girls due to the spinning disk design.

What are all the new Pro Series shoes best used for?
TSG: The SKECHERS Resistance Trainer™ Pro-TR shoes have the most lateral support, and is a great shoe for general training and most athletic activities.  The SKECHERS Resistance Runner™ ProRESISTANCE™ sneakers are cushioned to activate more muscles in every step – so it’s great for those who want to train or run harder in shorter periods, whether they run, walk or jog.  The SKECHERS Resistance Runner™ ProSpeed™ sneakers are the lightest shoes in the Pro series, and are ideal for running, jogging and walking, including racing and competing.

Where can I buy this shoe near me?
TSG: While the easiest answer to this question is often “right here at SKECHERS.com,” we also recommend looking at our Store Locator that will not only show you SKECHERS retail stores in your area, but all stores selling SKECHERS shoes.

What’s new and exciting at skechers.com?
Fall is just around the corner! Gear up with the latest styles of SKECHERS boots for men and women!TSG: It’s always an exciting time of year around now – boot season is here, and skechers.com has a lot of boots up now and even more coming in.  We’re really excited about our newest generation of SKECHERS Fitness shoes, including the exciting and hot-selling Shape-ups Liv by SKECHERS™.  Of course, kids are crazy for light-up shoes like Luminators™ and the newest Hot Lights™ for boys, and the SKECHERS Bella Ballerina™ shoes are very popular with girls.

We’re also excited to be teaming up with McDonald’s for a Happy Meal toy and coupon – girls can save on SKECHERS Twinkle Toes™ sneakers, and women can save on all SKECHERS fitness and athletic shoes!
