BEST BOOKS OF SUMMER

Remember when school would send you a summer book list so you didn’t idle your vacation days away? Although those days are long gone for most of our staff (save our interns), we love that we can now spend our summers reading anything we please! We asked our Skechers crew what they’ve been reading, and discovered some delightful surprises. Take a look and see if any sound like fun books for the end of summer!

Ashley

Two new riveting and weird books out August 2 with multiple POVs (points of view) will offer intense poolside reading or keep you up late!

Harmony (by Carolyn Parkhurst, The Dogs of Babel) follows the Hammond family as they leave their life and belongings behind to help genius and impossible daughter/sister Tilly as they set up Camp Harmony with a domineering and manipulating child behavior expert. The story unfolds with swear words and humor as told by Tilly, sister Iris, and mom Alexandra.

Watching Edie (by Camilla Way) is a psychological suspense page-turner as the lives of two childhood friends are revealed–one from “Before” as told by Heather, and the other from “After” as told by Edie. The twists and turns can be unsettling as this dark friendship unfolds in this story of the unpopular and popular in a depressed British town.

Maxine

Fredrik Backman’s protagonist Ove is my father if he were Swedish, worked on trains and loved Saabs. A Man Called Ove is warm and uplifting as well as tragic and heart-wrenching. A curmudgeon, Ove sets out to off himself from the first chapter as he wishes to join his recently deceased wife. But each time he tries, he is interrupted, until it gets to the point that Ove becomes a much needed man–even though he tries his hardest not to be. Ove proves one small act–intended or not–can have a positive impact–sometimes life changing. Bonus: New York Times Bestseller list.

Zoey

Mitch Albom’s Tuesdays with Morrie is a great read. It teaches you some really cool life lessons, different views between generations and the importance of appreciating the little things in life rather than getting caught up on the idea that money brings you happiness.

Kate

I’m reading J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series with my six-year-old daughter.  It’s like reading them for the first time again!

Emma

I’ve been reading Bad Feminist by Roxane Gay. She has such amazing insight on critical social issues, and a gentle but perfectly sarcastic voice through which she shares her stories and opinions.

Earl

Marvel’s Civil War II. I haven’t read comics in a long time but now that I can conveniently follow on my tablet, I’ve found myself feeling like a kid and suddenly sucked back in to the latest transformative crossover story involving the Avengers and company.

Janet

Humans of New York Stories by Brandon Stanton. The latest book added to the HONY series features eye-opening stories from people all over New York City. The book is equally moving and uplifting, perfect for a trip to the beach or a long plane ride.

Linda

Most of my current reads these days are children’s books during my kid’s bedtime. We love Countablock (Christopher Franceschelli and Peskimo’s beautiful book with vivid, creative drawings that take you from 1-100)… Margret & H.A. Rey’s Happy Easter, Curious George (for us, it’s Easter all year round!) and Don Freeman’s Corduroy, a touching story about a toy bear who lives at the store and the adorable girl who wants to buy him.

Venus

So many on my list! I’ve been meaning to read Anthony Doerr’s All The Light We Cannot See for quite a while, and finally I will get some time to do a deep dive. Clint Hill and Lisa McCubbin’s Four Days in November was recommended to me by a friend; I love history and it’s dealing with the assassination of John F. Kennedy and first person accounts of its impact through a variety of people and sectors. I’ve heard that it’s incredibly interesting and brings an entirely new perspective on historical revisionism.  Edward K. Y. Chen’s Hyper-Growth in Asian Economies: I’m an economics buff so it’s just my thing. The Wealth Of Nations: just a classic economics reader of Adam Smith – it’s nice to read it without being told to read it.🙂 And Haruki Murakami and Alfred Birnbaum’s A Wild Sheep Chase: A Novel is a lot of fun; I read the sequel first.

JoJo

I haven’t picked out a good summer read yet.  Luckily for this list, I can start one of their suggestions!

So many to choose from… which books do you love? Tell us!

WORLD SKECHERS DAY

SKX GRoup ShotOn May 29, 1992—24 years ago—an exciting idea became a reality when Skechers was officially incorporated in sunny Manhattan Beach, California. Things were a bit different in those early days. Business was conducted from a beach house and the only style available was a logger boot at the forefront of grunge era trends. While we’ve always been proud of our heritage, many styles have come and gone over the years, but that original Cascades boot for men remains in the collection even today!

Skechers quickly gained popularity and before anyone could blink, the collection expanded to women’s and kids’ footwear and currently there’s more than 3,000 styles available in over 160 countries around the globe. What started out as a trend-right lifestyle brand now includes cool light-up shoes for kids, the charity-focused BOBS collection and an entire award-winning Skechers Performance Division that made an instant impact in the running world with champion elite marathoner Meb Keflezighi. And with Skechers Memory Foam, we’re now tops when it comes to comfort. It’s been an amazing ride!

Along the way we’ve brought some amazing celebrity talent—Britney, Christina, Carrie, Ashley, a man of iron, and the always infamous Kim.  Now it’s all about multi-platinum recording artists Demi Lovato and Meghan Trainor who both recently launched fun new ads for awesome cool new collections. And there’s the world famous drummer Ringo Starr, model and actress Kelly Brook, as well as TV personality Brooke Burke-Charvet–she first modeled for Skechers in the early ’90s! Plus, Joe Montana is back and Howie Long is on board for the 2016 football season.  That’s all in addition to Meb and elite runner Kara Goucher plus pro golfers Matt Kuchar, Belén Mozo and Colin Montgomerie.  Whew!  Still going incredibly strong at the ripe age of 24!

#WorldSkechersDay commemorates this great occasion in Skechers history! Some of our fans shared images of their favorite Skechers old and new on social media. When were you introduced to Skechers and what is your all-time favorite Skechers style?  Let us know in the comments and see you next year for the Skechers Silver Anniversary when we celebrate a quarter century!

BLOG TAKEOVER: FESTIVAL STYLE WITH MERMAID WAVES

The unofficial start of the 2016 music festival season kicks off today at Coachella in Indio, California. With headliners like LCD Soundsystem, Guns ‘n Roses and Calvin Harris, the legendary event has options for every eclectic taste. But as any festival veteran knows, it’s about more than just the music. Finding the ideal outfits for hours under the bright sunshine is part of the fun. We checked in with style blogger Dani McGowan of Mermaid Waves who paired her favorite festival fashion with Skechers.

LOOK ONE:

I had to create a bohemian look for festival season.  Just because its bohemian doesn’t mean it has to be basic.  I took inspiration from my favorite fashion era, the seventies.  Adding some vintage glam to your bohemian look will make it anything but basic this season.  These Skechers Footsteps-Jagged Edge sandals have a cork wedge that complements a bohemian-inspired outfit.  They are the perfect festival shoe with a memory foam sole that you can dance in all day long, and a small wedge for the right amount of height.  I paired my sandals with an embroidered top and cargo shorts.  My favorite part of festival styling is piling on the accessories, for festivals ADD another accessory before you walk out the door.  A vintage scarf is a great way to look glam and also keep your hair in place.  Oversized sunnies are my eyewear of choice for every occasion.

LOOK TWO:

This look is a tribute to the ultimate girl gang–the Spice Girls.  What better way to celebrate music than taking inspiration from some of your favorite ladies?! I paired a simple striped dress with my Skechers Breeze Low – Moon and Stars sandals.  I am so attached to these sandals, I wear them to the ballet studio, to school, to the spa, and now to a festival!  Having a jacket or some kind of extra layer is key to staying comfortable when at a festival all day.  You never know when some kind of crazy weather will kick in.  I keep mine tied around my waist, doubling as a cute accessory.  I just had to incorporate another vintage scarf into this look, this time I tied it around my neck.  I never travel without some kind of bag, its best to keep everything you need to survive the day (sunscreen, lip balm, money) in one place.  Who doesn’t love a sparkly pizza purse?! It doubles as the perfect photo prop!

LOOK THREE:

Festivals are a major workout so make sure your outfit is up for the job.  I am rocking my Skechers D’lites with some flirty ruffled socks.  These sneakers are great for running around from the stages to the food tents.  I love a simple piece I can throw on and wear all day, so I chose this vintage tennis dress to add the sporty vibe.  These floral sunnies are so much fun and the ideal way to spice up a sporty look.  This backpack is one that I DIYed myself, I added patches and pompons to create a bag perfect for me!  I have been taking this bag with me on all my vacation and festival adventures and it reminds me of many fun memories each time I carry it.

SKECHERS FOUNDATION GIVES $1.4 MILLION TO KIDS

One of the best parts of the annual Skechers Pier to Pier Friendship Walk is when we get to share the funds raised from the event – and last week was one of these special milestones. Supported by celebs like Brooke Burke-Charvet, Sugar Ray Leonard and Denise Austin, the Skechers Foundation presented record-breaking funds: a $434,000 check for the Friendship Foundation to help children with special needs, and $932,000 dedicated to six education foundations. We also celebrated the launch of our scholarship program – with $25,000 in scholarships for 11 well-deserving high school students, who were recognized for their great potential, leadership and contributions to their schools and communities.

To see the annual donations from this event grow seven-fold since its first year in 2009 has been incredible for our Skechers team. Every day, we get to see the results first-hand: from the Friendship Foundation’s programs for children with special needs, to the long-lasting benefits it has on our schools’ teachers, libraries, award-winning programs and more.

The Walk has raised more than $5 million for kids through the years – all because of the generosity of headlining sponsor Nickelodeon, numerous companies like Wells Fargo, Steel Sports, South Bay Vein and Laser Group, The Claudette and Ethan Rickett Care Foundation and Zappos.com, and celebrities, friends and families who want a better future for our children. We look forward to our 2016 Skechers Pier to Pier Friendship Walk, and continuing this wonderful tradition for years to come.

WINNING WEEKEND IN LA FOR SKECHERS PERFORMANCE ELITE MEB & WELDON

The Skechers Performance Los Angeles Marathon booth at the Health and Fitness Expo in Los Angeles.

It’s a great feeling to walk the streets of Los Angeles and watch the city prep for its biggest race weekend of the year: banners, stands and barricades stretching for miles, readying for tens of thousands to run, cheer and celebrate the greatest in the sport. And the weekend didn’t disappoint.

First off was the Rio Trials on Saturday, where our Skechers Performance elite athlete Meb continues to redefine the boundaries of greatness in his sport. Meb joined the Rio team with an incredible second place finish of 2:12:21 and set a new American Master’s marathon record in his custom Skechers GOmeb Speed 3 – 2016 shoes. Meb will be the oldest marathoner in US history to ever compete at the Games, and the only one to qualify four times. Skechers Performance elite athlete Kara Goucher also continued to rally a huge following with her incredible comeback, making the team as an alternate marathoner. Altogether, we had an incredible 27 elite Skechers Performance athletes competing in the Trials.

Weldon Kirui

Weldon Kirui wins in Skechers GOmeb Speed 3 – 2016

And on Sunday, the first ever 2016 Skechers Performance Los Angeles Marathon launched – along with its own storybook ending. Avid Skechers Performance runner Weldon Kirui flew in from Kenya and incredibly, his airline lost his luggage – which for many of us, would have been our worst nightmare. As serendipity would have it, Skechers Performance happened to title sponsor the event – and promptly brought him a replacement pair of Skechers GOmeb Speed 3 – 2016 running shoes, in which he came in first, winning in 2:13:06.

We are thrilled and honored to partner with so many incredible runners and athletes who continue to choose greatness every day to reach new heights in their sport. We look on to Rio and beyond for many more incredible triumphs in store for our elite Skechers Performance team.
