BIG PAPI MEETS LITTLE PAPI AT THE DERBY

Boston slugger David “Big Papi” Ortiz took a break from retirement for a trip to Churchill Downs for the Kentucky Derby last weekend.  The all-star traded his baseball uniform for racing silks to hang out with 2015 Triple Crown-winning jockey Victor “Little Papi” Espinoza in the Jockey Room at the famed racetrack. Ortiz recently signed on to become a global endorsee representing Skechers Men’s footwear and Espinoza donned Skechers on his racing pants for the 143rd running of the Kentucky Derby.  Both men proudly represented Skechers at the event known as the most exciting two minutes in sports.

Victor was riding California Chrome at the Belmont Stakes when Skechers sponsored the horse in 2014. This time we partnered with the hall-of-fame jockey himself as he attempted to become one of only four to have won the race four times. When we asked Victor his thoughts on Skechers and the big race, he said:

“When I’m relaxing away from the track, I’ve always loved how comfortable Skechers shoes feel. As my career really hit its stride on the West Coast, I’m thrilled to have such an iconic California brand supporting me on this incredible journey.”

Unfortunately his horse, Gormley, didn’t have a win in his legs this time, but Espinoza made a memorable impression with Skechers on the very sloppy race day track.

After twenty seasons in the majors, ten-time All-Star David Ortiz was ready to lay down his bat. Reflecting on his career and the new partnership with Skechers he said:

“While I knew I’d miss things about the game, I’m definitely able to enjoy my retirement in comfort thanks to my new partnership with Skechers. Toward the end of my career it felt like I was playing on two stubs, but now these Skechers have me feeling like I’m walking on the clouds!”

SKECHERS PERFORMANCE LOS ANGELES MARATHON WRAP UP

Sixty runners from 35 countries representing all levels of athletes from around the globe came out to Los Angeles as part of the #GORUNLA campaign leading up the Skechers Performance Los Angeles Marathon on Sunday. It all started at the two-day pre-race expo at the Los Angeles Convention Center where runners, fans and supporters could find an exclusive collection of limited edition footwear, apparel and accessories including the super cool black and white Los Angeles Skechers GOrun Forza 2 seen above.  More than 33,000 stopped by the expo and passed through the massive Skechers Performance booth and had the chance to meet 2016 winner Weldon Kirui and Skechers Performance runner Kara Goucher.

And then on race day over 23,000 runners from all 50 states and 63 countries ran the 26.2 miles from Dodger Stadium to the Santa Monica pier. It was an extremely fun and exciting day for all involved! Several elite athletes wearing Skechers Performance footwear had great finishes including Jane Kibii from Kenya (seen below) who came in second at 2:36:14 and Heather Lieberg from the United States at 2:43:43 for the women as well as Weldon Kirui of Kenya who crossed the finish line fourth among the men at 2:13:24.

We’re also incredibly proud of all the first-time runners this year! Check out Sophie Geoffrion and Chloé Rochette from Quebec, Canada moments after they crossed the finish line—a first marathon completion for both who supported each other through training and every mile of the race. It’s always a thrill to see that joy after crossing the finish line!

After all the hard work it was time to party and relax…and we welcomed our #GORUNLA vip runners, the more then 50 runners from the Skechers team in Manhattan Beach, and all the event supporters at the Starlight Room VIP lounge near the finish line. At this point it was time to catch our breath…the 2018 Skechers Performance Los Angeles Marathon is now less than a year away!  Early bird registration is available through Friday, March 25…learn more at lamarathon.com!

SKECHERS PIER TO PIER FRIENDSHIP WALK RAISES $1.6 MILLION FOR KIDS

It’s been eight years since our Skechers Pier to Pier Friendship Walk started in Manhattan Beach – and we’re so grateful that every year of the walk to date has brought record-breaking donations for children with special needs and schools. This past Sunday, we had our largest attendance yet – 12,000 people – all walking to raise more than $1.6 million for kids.

They joined all kinds of celebrities – Brooke Burke-Charvet, Sugar Ray Leonard, Camila Alves, Ian Ziering, Denise and Katie Austin, and Tommy Lasorda; a squad of teen TV and movie stars; and Walk performers Asia Monet Ray, Jordyn Jones, New District and Aidan Prince. Sponsors backing the Walk included lead sponsors Nickelodeon and NBC4 Southern California, and national and local companies from every industry: retail, finance, technology, fitness, foundations and more.

When we look back at our very first Walk, we’re astounded by how it’s grown from a passionate community event into the nation’s largest for kids with special needs and education. In spite of its growth, we’re thrilled to see that it remains the same: the focus continues to be on our kids, and how we can achieve amazing things together to help them thrive.

The Friendship Foundation has been a huge gift for children with special needs and their families, and this year’s funds will continue to support their efforts with programs, peer mentoring, sporting events, and field trips. Education foundations will also be able to improve our schools by retaining teachers and programs, making classes smaller and upgrading facilities and technology. And we continue to provide scholarships to deserving children – $100,000 will be given in 2017. All this is because so many have given so much (an incredible $7 million over the years).
