BLOG TAKEOVER: LIFE IN BALI

We sent a few pairs of Skechers to Bali for expat American writer Caroline Griswold to share her take on what it means to live in paradise when you’re not just a tourist.

Bright sunlight streams in through my curtains, and the roosters up the road are crowing. I hear some distant chanting at a temple, and the fragrant incense from the daily offerings wafts through the air. These foreign, yet comforting, sensory experiences have all become familiar the past three months I’ve been living on the island of Bali.

Full of beautiful landscapes, lush vegetation and cheerful people, Bali has everything I could ever want. I’ve spent the last three months in Canggu, an area of South West Bali that’s just a 20-minute scooter ride away from the bustling city of Seminyak. During the typical day in Bali, I usually have some tropical fruit for breakfast, go to yoga, and get some work done at Dojo, a coworking space just steps from the beach.

Seen above:  The Vinyasa – Beach Bae sandal during yoga practice and a relaxing fruit breakfast in the BOBS Day 2 Nite espadrille in turquoise. Plus, below as well on the scooter is the Ultra Flex – First Choice.

Yes, you read that right. It is possible to get work done in Bali. Doing so, however, has made me way more effective at time management. With so many adventures available a short scooter ride away, it’s definitely difficult to be disciplined and work on my laptop instead of exploring a hidden waterfall or wandering through a monkey forest. Somehow, in this verdant paradise, I manage.

Every day, it seems like more and more tourists come to the island, but I honestly don’t blame them. Who wouldn’t want to come here and relax on beautiful black sand beaches, sipping from a refreshing coconut? Doesn’t trekking along picturesque rice terraces among lush greenery seem more appealing than a morning commute on the highway? I can assure you that a picture of a Balinese sunset on Instagram doesn’t compare to witnessing it in person, relaxing on a bean bag on the beach.

Below the BOBS in chestnut and the Reggae – Zig Swag sandal are perfect for beach days.

Whatever your style may be, Bali probably has something for you. Adventure, relaxation, and endless natural beauty — along with beautiful people and culture — make for a destination like no other on this planet.

CHENGDU: A SKECHERS CITY WALK

Skechers is exceptionally popular in China and our team there invites you to join us on a fascinating photo exploration of the capital city of China’s Sichuan province—ChengDu. Follow along for some insight into the small aspects of life within this massive 2,300 year-old mega city.

When speaking of ChengDu, the first word that often comes into mind has to be “spice”. This feels relevant for its food, its people, and its fashion. And today, wearing her Skechers, ChengDu local girl Boa will walk us through the less-seen “slow-living” face of this provincial capital of Sichuan.

First stop:
Ming Tang Creative Hub
No.55 Kuixinglou Street, Qingyang District, Chengdu, China

Prior to its recent transformation, this traditional, Germanic building was idle for years. Now it has become a creative hub filled with young creatives in Chengdu, hosting exhibitions, creative salons, live shows, music performances and creative fairs all year round. You’ll know you’ve entered the carpentry workshop on the second floor as soon as the wall of specialized carpentry tools comes into sight. Similar but also very different to pottery and floriculture workshops, this space offers carpentry production experience and customized carpentry service.

NU CAFÉ is a well-known place not only for its “20RMB unlimited-refills” of Americano, but also its leisure atmosphere and the panoptic windows filled with event posters. Keep walking through the cafe and you will find NU SPACE that sells all kinds of contemporary artwork.

Second stop:
XIAOTONGXIANG
Qingyang district, Chengdu City, China

Right next to NU SPACE, XIAOTONGXIANG is like the other side of the coin. Each store is like its own little world and you can even see the neighborhood hanging clothes in the balconies when you raise your head. This area defines “slow-living” in Chengdu.

Hidden in XIAOTONGXIANG, the BAOXIAN Xinjiang Rice Noodles restaurant is a Xinjiang restaurant, but with a breath of Japanese literature. Famous for its Beef Rice Noodles, it also sells handmade pottery.

Third stop:
Taikoo Li
No.8 Zhongshamao Street, Jinjiang District, Chengdu, China

Located in between the historic DACI Temple and the Chunxi Road Commercial Area, Sino-Ocean Taikoo Li Chengdu is representative of traditional architectural style with its modern technique, bringing the Chengdu marketplace back to life and offering an overlapped experience of both fast & slow-living. A perfect example of this is at MIXUN Tea House which brings a traditional atmosphere into the cosmopolitan Taikoo Li, offering a chance to “pause” and enjoy a cup of tea within the “spices” of people and fashion in Taikoo Li.

Between “Hellos” and “Good-byes” in a city injected with fresh air and new energies, Chengdu is a “living” example of combining slow-living with modern development.  So while spice comes to mind in this part of China, SLOW-LIVING is an even better label for Chengdu–and Spring in this city, is definitely one of a kind.

Bao is seen above wearing the Skechers Burst – City Scene,  Skechers GOwalk 4 – All Day Comfort and a limited style from the Skechers GOwalk Sport collection as she explored ChengDu. Find your perfect comfortable pair of Skechers for shopping, chilling or city-walking today at skechers.com.

SKECHERS CANADA ON WATERFALLS AND WINERIES

We asked the Skechers Canada team to share some cool travel ideas for visitors to their great country. And as you can see in the photos, there’s a Skechers style for every aspect of this adventure–you’ll find all the specific styles featured at the end!

Canada is finally in summer mode, and we can’t wait to get going on our favorite outdoor activities. With summer being such a short season for us Canucks, we do our best to spend as much time in the great outdoors as possible; exploring our vast lands that offer picturesque scenes of mountain peaks, wheat fields, wine regions, waterfalls and more! Canada is a huge country with lots to discover and we are excited to share it with you. But we should mention that it’s a lot nicer to experience in person, so make sure to come on over/up this season and say hi!

We have a soft spot for Southern Ontario. With beautiful beaches that line the Great Lakes, award-winning wineries you can treat yourself to and northern cottage countries that go on for miles, we have it made and it’s a region that deserves some boasting. Although some people only recognize Hamilton as Ontario’s steel town, it’s incredible to note that it is actually the home of more than 100 waterfalls and big or small, they are all worth a visit. Waking up early when the world is still quiet and all you can hear is the water crashing onto the rocks is the best way to experience these natural beauties.

If you’re a wine lover but can’t make it all the way to Okanagan, BC to fill up your glass with some robust reds and sweet whites, then Niagara’s wine region is the next best place to be. Some of these wineries may not be as big as you’re used to, but the small-batch collections are carefully crafted and are so tasty you’ll start taking Ontario wines seriously. The region is so abundant we’ve even got Mike Weir and Wayne Gretzky getting in on the action! Who can resist a glass from The Great One and the 2003 Masters champ?

And when you feel satisfied from all the wine and cheese, don’t forget to make a stop at Niagara Falls where you can admire one of the Seven Wonders of the World and enjoy a colorful and eclectic stroll up Clifton Hill.

Our Great Lakes — Superior, Huron, Michigan, Ontario and Erie — make up the largest body of fresh water on Earth, accounting for one-fifth of the freshwater surface on the planet. Lake Ontario is the smallest of them all, but one of the greatest metropolises in Canada (Toronto, ON a.k.a the 6ix) runs along the shoreline as well as a curious little neighborhood full of colorful beach/gingerbread houses in Grimsby, ON. It’s amazing what we have in our own backyard and we find it easy to call Lake Ontario home.

And of course, while we get our feet wet at the waterfalls and admire the summer sunsets over Lake Ontario, we’ve always got our SKECHERS on to keep us comfy from morning to night.

If you’re thinking about traveling to Canada but want to explore outside of the Southern Ontario region – no problem! Look forward to enjoying some stunning mountain views in Squamish, BC, some incredible rivers and lavender farms in Montreal and quaint fishing ports in the beautiful and always hospitable Twilingate, NF. No matter what you love to do, Canada has something for everyone!

Check out all the styles we wore on this adventure!  Seen in the images above from top to bottom—Reggae Loopy and Redemption sandals, Luxe South Coast BOBS, Bright Horizon sport bungee with the comfortable Memory Foam insole,  BOBS Plush Dream Doodle flats, GOVulc2 Definite sneakers and our favorite women’s Hi-Lite style.

NATIONAL SHOEFIE DAY

In recognition of National Selfie Day, we want to celebrate the Skechers remix of the classic selfie concept. We call it a SHOEFIE—and we love seeing yours!  That’s right, it’s exactly as you probably expect.  Take that phone camera and point it right at your kicks to show your favorite pair off to the world in all its amazing glory. What’s best about the SHOEFIE is that there are so many options. There’s the classic point down that captures the shoes on your feet from above.  There’s the lay out where you sit on the ground and extend your feet with something glorious in the background.  We always enjoy seeing the prop up where feet are extended into the air. Alternatively, you can take the shoes off and capture a still life SHOEFIE.  And lastly there’s the Cheatshot—as you can imagine this is where someone else is obviously holding your camera to take that picture. Sometimes you must break the rules to get that perfect image, and we’re 100% OK with that!

We want to see your Skechers SHOEFIE! And to encourage you to show us those perfect shots, every month we’re offering three lucky winners a $25 Skechers gift card.  It’s easy to enter—just post to Facebook, Instagram and Twitter with #spottedinSKECHERS. For inspiration, check out some of our recent favorites below…your next shot could end up in our feed in front of millions! Check out the full contest rules here.

ISLAND LIFE IN SKECHERS

One of our Skechers interns had a really unique childhood… she grew up on the tiny island of Catalina off the coast of Southern California (approx. 4,000, with fewer than 500 people in the town where she grew up)! We asked her to share her experiences growing up on this nearby but remote getaway, and learned how her family’s Skechers styles play a big role in their day-to-day lives off the mainland.

Two Harbors, Catalina Island

All my life I’ve lived off the coast of California on the little island of Catalina. And the biggest necessity of my life has been comfort. The residential areas (a tiny city and an even tinier town) are built along the sloping terrain, making getting anywhere quite a feat for our feet.

We islanders walk (or run since island time doesn’t always follow schedule) basically everywhere. We walk for exercise, to work, to the singular grocery store, and then back home at the end of the day. We need shoes that can do it all. For me, those shoes are Skechers.

My family has been Skechers fans since the beginning. I wear Skechers anywhere I go: the beach, college, during a casual out-and-about. Other shoes squeeze my toes and rub my heels the wrong way leaving my feet covered in bandages. Skechers give me room to breathe and simply feel good to wear in general with their memory foam soles.

My parents operate at two different ends of the work spectrum. Although my mother has a short commute to the harbor office (a five-second walk across the beach) she’s always either donned her Skechers GOrun sneakers or athletic sandals. She says the comfortable nature of the shoes, as well as the bright, fun colors, is a must while she caters to the boaters at her window.

My father operates in a more hands-on job with power tools, machines, and such. Over the past two decades he has worn nothing but Skechers’ work boots because they’re the ideal combination of durability and, of course, comfort. Day after day, he put them through the ringer but they keep on keeping on.  He even keeps a spare pair in his closet so he never has to worry about being without his brand.

Avalon, Catalina Island

There was one occasion when I was visiting Avalon (the tiny city) and off the express boat saunters a dressed up woman with a huge black sunhat flopping about her head – but what struck me was the fact that she had high heels on. Now I hold nothing against heels, they’re quite fashionable – but these were tall, pointy-toed and undoubtedly uncomfortable. And on an island like ours, I wondered if she would be more comfortable in a pair of Skechers GOwalk or Reggae sandals.

Skechers are fashion-forward, vibrant, tough as nails, versatile, and most importantly comfortable. And for island life, they’re a personal go-to shoe.

What is your favorite Skechers style for trekking your own terrain? Tell us in the comments!

FATHER’S DAY MEMORIES WITH SUGAR RAY LEONARD

Sugar Ray Leonard with his kids Daniel and Camille in Frankfurt, Germany.

As we prepare to celebrate dads, we took a few moments to chat about fatherhood with one of our favorite dads—legendary athlete and Skechers footwear star Sugar Ray Leonard. Plus, his kids Daniel, Camille, Jarrel, and Ray Jr. share some fun memories about their famous dad.

SKX: You’ve mastered the ring and the boxing world.  What are your tips for mastering fatherhood?

SRL:  Well, you never can really master it.  But what I have learned, is that I must be extremely patient with my kids and simply just hear them out and listen to them.

SKX: What are your favorite activities to do with your kids?

SRL: My favorite thing to do with my kids is just being in their presence. Now that they are all grown up, it is a lot harder to get all four of them together. I really cherish the moments when that happens. My youngest, Daniel is now a teenager and my daughter, Camille, is already in college! Plus, having two older kids, Ray Jr. and Jarrel, who now have their own families, every moment we spend together is priceless.

SKX:  What is your most memorable Father’s Day?

SRL: I have so many great memories throughout the years from Father’s Day. But, one moment that sticks out was actually my birthday last year when all of my kids came to surprise me. I had no clue that they would all be here, together, to celebrate my birthday and that moment really sticks out as a favorite memory.

SKX: How did you juggle being a father with being a professional boxer?

SRL: Juggling is the right word because being a father and a professional fighter, there were precious times I missed out on. Like my kids first step, saying for the first time ‘papa’ or ‘mama’, moments that I had to sacrifice. I try to make up for those now, but I don’t think I every fully can.

Jarrel, Camille and Ray Jr. at their dad’s 60th birthday celebration.

“A memory that comes to mind is my dad trying to boogie board. He is not an ocean person but he knew I was, so he tried to go out and boogie board with me. He was struggling tough trying to get past the waves. It was very funny to watch, but after a couple min in the cold water he said it wasn’t for him and sat on the beach, it was a funny experience.”
-Daniel

“I remember going to Australia with my dad and my two older brothers. It was my first time away from my mom for a week. The four of us went to the Sydney Harbour Bridge to walk across and it was SO high above the water! We were all nervous but the funny part was my dad was the most scared. I remember I was able to encourage him and give him the confidence to overcome his fear of heights and we all conquered the bridge together. It was such a cool experience that I’ll never forget!”
-Camille

“I remember my dad’s 50th birthday party. It was an Austin Powers theme and of course he dressed as Austin Powers. All I can remember is him dancing, or at least I think that’s what it was. lol. It was far from his great footwork in the ring to say the least. I’m glad dancing with the stars helped him with his moves.”
– Jarrel

Jarrel and Ray Jr. give their dad a hug.

“One of the fondest memories I have with my father was when he invited my wife and kids to go on vacation with him and the rest of the family to Hawaii. As the oldest kid, and “most responsible,” I was tagged with making sure everyone got to the airport in time to catch our flight. My wife and I had a 3-year-old and a new born baby and we NEEDED the vacation badly, so I was going to make sure that there was no way we missed that flight. It was close to 15 people traveling and to get that number of people and bags to LAX was going to be a mission, so I suggested we all get our bags together and put them at the front door so we would not have any last-minute issues. That morning I get everyone up and plan to get us to the airport with 3 hours to spare! Everyone is packing their items into the vans and for some reason my father is nowhere to be found. I am furious! I call him and look everywhere to find him. When I finally locate my father, he starts dragging his feet and saying he still must pack his bags. We are now down to an hour and a half before our flight takes off. No way we are going to be able to get 26 bags and 15 people through security and on the plane in that time. I still hold out hope and give the drivers some back-road directions to speed up our commute. My father is sitting next to me with a devilish smirk as I am in full panic mode. The driver speeds past the exit and I yell at him, “What are you doing”? He says he knows a short cut and the flight now takes off in 30 minutes. I’m frustrated and disappointed because I only had a few days off work and begin to explain to my wife and kids that they should just go. My father is laughing at me and says maybe next time you can go. I had given up all hope now and was ready to go back home.  Just as I begin to call my boss, I look up and we are pulling onto a runway.  I say, “What is this”?  After brief shock, I notice my father laughing hysterically and saying, you didn’t think they would leave without us, right?  He had chartered a flight for the whole family and we enjoyed one of the best vacations ever.

On this Father’s Day, I honor my dad’s sense of humor and his flair for the dramatic! Lol. I wouldn’t have had it happen any other way!”
-Ray Leonard Jr.
