MUST-DO MONDAY: HEAD OUTDOORS

So technically, spring is still a month away – but we’re already dreaming about all the things we want to do when the weather gets warm (it could be the torrential rain we’ve been having out here – yes, I know that we West Coast folks need to toughen up)…

All jokes aside, it’s been a long, cold winter for many of us, and we can’t wait to get out and enjoy some gorgeous sun. So our motto is, head outside – rain, snow or shine! (We went to Hawaii for this photo!)

Make the most of this long weekend and enjoy the great outdoors – whether it’s up on a mountain, out on a beach or all over the city. Go for a bike ride or a stroll with a friend, breathe in the crisp winter air and enjoy every moment. It’s great medicine for your body, your mind and your soul (not to mention a bonus for those long-forgotten fitness resolutions). Sure, we may have winter for a month longer (thanks, Punxsutawney Phil) but a winter adventure has a charm all its own.

BLOG TAKEOVER: STICK TO YOUR NEW YEAR’S GOALS IN FIVE STEPS

When it comes to taking life goals seriously, no one inspires our office better than Stress Monkee guru (and Team Skechers expert) Alicia Murphy! Here are her tips on how to continue your New Year’s Resolutions all year round.

Here we are, good ol’ January.  That time of year where many of us declare our unwavering commitment to making changes.

Yet, somehow when February rolls around (or maybe even sooner) we end up going right back to our old ways.

According to research (University of Scranton) only 8% of us achieve our Resolutions.  What gives?!

The problem isn’t a lack of information.  Nowadays, you can Google your way to being an expert in anything.

“If information were the answer, we’d all be billionaires with perfect abs.” – Derek Sivers (On point, Mr. Sivers!)

But listen, if you’re starting to slip on your New Year’s Goals, don’t sweat it. Tomorrow is a chance to start again.

Aaaaand, I have a little something to help you out.

5 Steps to be one of the 8% who nails the New Year’s Goals:

STEP #1 – Go Slow to Go Fast

If you’re scratching your head wondering what in the world I’m talking about, check this out.

One of the biggest reasons we don’t reach our goals is because we take on too many changes at once.

We create a massive “to do” list of changes to reach our goals.

We try to make changes in all different areas.  Our weight.  Our health.  Our finances.  Our job.  Our relationships.

Phew!  I don’t know about you, but my life can get hectic.  Trying to keep up with all those changes in different areas can only last for so long.

Try this:

Focus on only one area of your life that you’d like to change at a time.

My favorite way to do this is have a “theme” each month.  Maybe January is weight loss month.  Then February is relationship month.  Then March is health month… and so on.

I know it seems like it’ll take longer, but doing it this way means the changes will stick.  You can totally reinvent yourself by this time next year!

Alicia works out in Skech-Air Cloud.

STEP #2 – Make It So Simple, You Can’t Say No

Okay, now that you’ve picked one area of your life, how do you make change happen?

You pick one thing that takes a small amount of effort, but will give you the most results.

By doing this, you’ll be taking some of the “pain” out of change.  Trust me on this one.

If you start small, you’ll build up momentum and you’ll start to see dramatic results.

Try this:

Think about the change you want to make happen, and then ask yourself, what is the ONE thing you can do that will get you results?  Remember, it’s got to be something that you know you can stick to.

Example: I want to drop 10 pounds.  What are some things I could do (that I know I could stick to) that will get me results?

Brainstorm time!  Write your ideas.

Here are a few suggestions to get you started:

– Eat veggies twice a day

– Drink 100 ounces of water every day

– Go to the gym 3 days per week (if this is your jam, check out this video for a quick workout)

– No sugar for 30 days

– No alcohol for 30 days

Make sure you pick only one thing. Master it and then move on to the next thing. Bam!

STEP #3 – Consistency is King

I seriously cannot emphasize this step enough.

The secret to success is found in your daily routine.

This is the biggest mistake I see people make when it comes to getting in shape.  They quit.

The ONE thing you chose in Step #2… stay consistent with it, and you will reach your goal.  It’s as simple as that.

We’re trying to create new habits here.  To do that, you must do something over and over again until it becomes natural.  And it will become natural if you stay consistent.

Try this:

Give yourself a time frame for your ONE thing from Step #2.

I recommend at least three weeks, but I like the idea of doing something for a whole month even better.

Example: “I will drink 100 ounces of water every day for 30 days.”

At the end of 30 days, if it still doesn’t feel natural, recommit and go again.

Alicia stretches in Skechers Burst 2.0 – New Avenues.

STEP #4 – Change Your Story

“…the body always follows the mind.” – Bruce Lee

How do you talk to yourself?

What “identity” have you labeled yourself with?

If you say things like, “Ugh, I’m so fat – I need to go to the gym,” then guess what… your body will believe it.

In other words, whatever you continually label yourself as, your body will work to make it true.

I’m stressed.  I’m tired.  I feel yucky.  I’m fat.

Stop the madness!!

Try this:

Who do you want to be?

Write it out.  Describe the person you want to be.  Then act “as if.”

Start to act as if you are already that person.

Taking our example from Step #3.

I am a healthy + fit person who drinks 100 ounces of water a day because it makes me feel amazing and I love it.

STEP #5 – Find Your Tribe

We are social creatures.  We long for connection (whether we know it or not).

You want to reach your goals?  Don’t go it alone.

Find others to go through the journey with you.  This is a crucial step; don’t be tempted to skip it.

Accountability and support are ridiculously important my friend, when it comes to change.

Try this:

Here are a few suggestions to “find your tribe.”

– Grab a friend who wants to make the same change you do. Hold each other accountable.

– Join a Facebook group.

– Tell a close friend or significant other your goal, and ask him or her to support you by holding you accountable.

– Declare your goal on social media. (This one doesn’t work for everyone, but it could be positive peer pressure!)

There you go… five steps to reaching your New Year’s goals.

Remember, each day is Day One.  If you slip up, just start again.

Let me leave you with this – you can do anything.  I promise.

Yes, change is hard, but if you can master the process, then you’ll be unstoppable!

On behalf of myself + Team Skechers,

We believe in you!

We’d love to hear from you in the comments below: what is the ONE change that you are going to focus on?

FIT TIPS FOR 2017

New year, new you! It’s that time again, when many of us make ambitious plans to get in shape. More than a few struggle to stick to it month after month – we all know how hard it is to balance those workouts with everything else going on in our lives! Approach your 2017 fitness goals differently this year and take a look at how some of our team plans to get in shape (and do their best to stay there)!

img_7852Joan – Be realistic! I make realistic fitness and nutrition goals like working out 3 times per week
(vs. 5 times) or not eating carbs after 2:00pm Monday through Friday (vs. every day). This way I can try to outdo myself rather than get discouraged by not meeting unrealistic goals.

Matt the Couch Potato – This year I’m going to limit the amount of alcohol I drink since it’s just empty calories.  I’m going to get up off the couch and walk around more…. maybe throw down some walking lunges or squats on the way out the door… carry a big water bottle with me all the time to get those crucial 64 ounces a day, minimum… and use it for bicep curls! Just remember to include some healthy moves and choices each day….

Brooklyn – My tips for staying healthy is to eat regularly but don’t eat too much at one sitting. A lot of people eat the most for dinner, but my tip would be to try and keep each meal even; if you need a larger meal, it should be for breakfast or lunch, not dinner.

Also, keeping a consistent workout schedule is key to maintaining a healthy body and mind. Set a goal and make it your priority – the longer you stay on track, the more it becomes a habit or routine and the easier it is to maintain.

img_7738Joey – New year, new workout plan. Best tips that help me are to 1) work out with friends and 2) switch it up. Working out with friends not only helps motivate me to go, but creates competition, so I work out a bit harder. By mixing it up, I don’t get bored with the same routines everyday. Also, it is important so your muscles don’t get used to the same exercises.

Lacey – When the days are shortest (and it’s really dark and cold for my 6AM workout days) I’ll go to sleep in my workout clothes so that I have to go when my alarm goes off.

Lola – Find a workout buddy and motivate them to continue with their fitness plan – and vice versa!

Jack – Running in a nice pair of lightweight shoes through the neighborhood around my place is what keeps me going through the holidays.

Pasquel – I try not to pay attention to anyone around me when the gym gets crowded after the new year.  I know what I need to do and I’m ready to be awesome.  It doesn’t matter what stage of fitness anyone else is at… I’m on a mission for me and me alone!

Dolores – my goal for 2017:

  1. Sweat 1x a day!
  2. Only eat until you are full. (eat slowly)

Ruth – my fitness inspo: Drink water as soon as you wake up in the morning. Before coffee or food. Sign yourself up for classes early so it forces you to go and get your money’s worth.

Selina – The get fit tip that has worked best for me is pre-planning, whether it be meal planning or planning out physical activity. I am much more motivated to eat healthy if I have meals ready to go rather than deciding what to eat just before every meal. It makes it easier to get to the gym when outfits are laid out in advance and the gym is planned into my schedule.

img_7815Mila – I love Seinfeld’s tip for getting stuff done; it applies to workouts too. Grab a calendar and marker, exercise a little every day and add an X over each day once you’re done. You’ll soon have a chain of Xs, and your only job then is to not break the chain (especially helpful for those times when your enthusiasm fades a few weeks in). It’s great way to stop focusing on the big goals and just stay committed to each and every day.

BLOG TAKEOVER: LORNA WEIGHTMAN STYLES SKECHERS

I work on my feet all day long, from shoots to filming TV and running around Dublin and most of Ireland to do my job. With this in mind I have to look after my feet, and I have been a long standing fan of Skechers. Aside from the support each pair gives, I feel I never have to compromise on style with either sneakers or shoes, and some of my most loved blog posts have been wearing some form of Skechers footwear! My followers on instagram love my shoe posts and in particular how I style my Skechers in each of my pictures. Me and my Skechers have been everywhere together in 2016!

Most recently, I traveled to Africa on a charity trip where I was out filming on mountains, remote villages and even Kilimanjaro! For those few important days I wore Skechers lightweight sneakers to keep my feet cool and comfortable. I cannot tell you how much I love Skechers Memory Foam! Every time I put on my trainers, my feet soak up the sponginess that encases them! I swear my feet have never been so happy! I love black trainers as I wear them with skirts and tights as much as I do with my favourite skinny jeans. My favourite pair right now have a snake skin print on the soles which gives a nod to the trend of the season!

I wear these to work but also to the gym! I love strength and conditioning training and when I am lifting weights I need to have my feet level on the ground. I find Skechers gives me the centre of gravity I need to support my feet and legs when I train. You have to protect your body when working out, so I started wearing  Skechers GOrun or Skechers GOtrail depending on the terrain for this great support they give me. Runs have never felt this great!

I’ve recently converted my Mum to wearing Skechers too for when she walks, and I am glad to report that she’s a fan too. We even have some of the same pairs! For anyone who wants to have a balance of supportive footwear for walking, training or just your regular day, there’s a Skechers shoe for you.

SKECHERS PETS OF INSTAGRAM

untitled-7638

For pet lovers everywhere it’s hard to find anything that brings more joy to the world than our four legged furry friends. And with the holiday season in full swing now that we are deep into wrapping paper, we turned to Instagram to find some of our favorites. Maya seen above looks nothing short of adorable with her reindeer ears. We imagine she just brought in that pair of Flex Advantage 2.0 sneakers to surprise her daddy on Christmas morning. Follow @mayathedox to see more!

The felines seem to approach the holidays in different ways. Albert (below, left) is ready for the snow in a cozy sweater. He couldn’t care less about the cold when out and about with his human friend wearing the Relaxed Fit Marselo boot built to tackle the elements. See more at @albertbabycat.

Some cats take on the role of dogs and protect property at all costs. Mick (above, right) sits stoically guarding a pair of Mecca – Sawmill boots for a young boy in the house. He’s daring you to try and challenge him and won’t rest until these shoes are worn and enjoyed in amazing snowplay. Emma (below, left) takes a more…we’ll call it direct…approach to the job. This little girl won’t ever let these cozy BOBS Plush slip-ons leave her paws! If you need to go out you’ll probably have to suffer through copious amounts of kitty cuddling first!  Follow Mick at @meowing_mick and Emma at @furryboy.leo.

For a cool Yorkie who is beyond ready to open presents check out Joey above. Have you ever seen a pup more eager for present time to begin?  The cleverly positioned men’s Mark Nason Parker boot and women’s Winchester – Mysterious boot send a covert signal that he’s ready for a walk.  Like right now. As seen below, Lucy and Emily can get by without a human friend. At least that’s what Lucy wants you to think as she’s put on a pair of D’Lites herself and is all set for the adventures that come. Emily clearly isn’t having it and despite Lucy’s best wishes will still beg for endless petting. Joey can be seen @joey__bateman and follow the ongoing mischief of Lucy and Emily @pupsonpar.

Last week in the spirit of the holidays we held a Skechers pet adoption event for the first time at our headquarters in Manhattan Beach. Our BOBS for DOGS charity partner Best Friends Animal Society stopped by with an adoption van and information for new pet owners. Countless essential items were donated to local pet shelters and everyone from the office loved hanging out and spreading cheer with dogs and cats for an afternoon and the puppy and kitty below (plus another kitty) found lucky new parents and forever homes! Learn more about the No-Kill LA initiative here.

We love seeing furry friends! If you have cool pictures of your pets please share on Instagram with #PetsOfSkechers.  Maybe we’ll feature you next time!  Happy holidays!
