I feel like summer is the season that always seems to end too soon. With scheduled obligations like weddings and social engagements already etched into my calendar, it’s important to make a list of the TOP FIVE things I want to…no MUST…do before the cooler days of autumn return.
1. GO TO THE BEACH
This seems almost silly considering I live an easy ten-minute walk from the Southern California coastline. (What can I say, it’s where Skechers HQ is located and I hate to commute!) The problem is when you have a resource that’s so amazing at your footstep, it’s easy to say, “we’ll go tomorrow.” Tomorrow becomes next week. Next week becomes next month. Next month becomes, “It’s October now?!” Not everyone lives near a beach, but there is always something amazing in your neighborhood or town that is easy to overlook.
2. SEE OUTDOOR ART
Whether it be summer stock theater, a sculpture exhibition or a craft artist fair, this time of year is ripe with cultural events that are fun, interesting and often inspiring. My problem is I always seem to learn about these things after the fact, so I am vowing to get through Summer ’15 without becoming jealous hearing about all the cool events I missed. One of my favorites that I haven’t done in many years is Pageant of the Masters in Laguna Beach, CA. It’s an amazing experience where performers bring paintings to life.
3. EAT SOMEWHERE NEW
We all get set in our ways. It’s easy to rely on the old standby every time you get hungry. But there’s a handful of intriguing restaurants in my neighborhood I’ve never visited and an endless number more around the city. Summer is the perfect time to step out of your comfort zone and try something new just because you can. You might even bump the old standby down a few notches and that’s OK! The barbecue joint in the next town over you always drive by…stop in and have a bite!
4. HIKE AND EXPLORE
It’s always nice to get out and explore nature. I have some favorite trails that I love to hike around the LA area and the variety of options is astounding. Whether I want a short cardio trek somewhere like Temescal Canyon (link) or a longer adventure to the 10,000 foot summit of Mt. Baldy there’s always something to meet my needs. It’s all about the spirit of adventure and I plan to push farther into some wilderness areas where I’ve never set foot before. Even if hiking isn’t your thing, there are adventures to be had everywhere.
I save this one for last as it’s dependent on the other four. At this point in my life, schedules are so busy that I have to make an appointment with myself to sit back and work on personal creative endeavors. Be it writing, painting, or anything, creative expression is the best kind of stress relief on Earth. From the beach to art to food to the mountains, I look everywhere for inspiration. And if these things provide me with the fuel to write a new story, take photographs I’m proud to share, or craft a cool piece of work on canvas, then I’ll be happy to call the summer of 2015 a total success.
