LITTLE SOUTHERN WIFE’S SKECHERS WORKOUT

From being a mom of three to blogging and staying fit, Amanda of Little Southern Life does it all! We partnered with our guest blogger to learn more about her mindset on getting in shape, and how Skechers fits into her regular fitness attire. Check out her thoughts and some of her favorite workout reps below.

Y’all, I can honestly say that choosing to invest in my body is one of the best decisions I ever made for myself. It literally changed my life. I lost weight and I didn’t feel like I was being held captive by my own body anymore. Three babies later and now I am in the best shape of my life. Exercising is more than just a way of getting that summer box, it’s about having a little “me time” and focusing on myself. The kids take up most of my time, which I love but if I don’t do a little something for me, I feel my cup becoming empty. I make it a point to get some form of exercise into every single day. It might be going for a walk, a run, yoga class or working out at home to a YouTube video, but I make sure I do it! Working out is a great way to relieve stress, keep my anxiety at bay and overall help me stay in a positive head space. I have noted over the years that the time I didn’t keep exercise at the top of my priorities is when I became depressed easier.

I recently took over Skechers‘ Instagram for the day and showcased how my entire family wears Skechers. To say that we love them is a bit of an understatement. They are SO comfortable and I love all of the new styles they have available. I have been on the prowl for sneakers that I could wear with my workout attire and feel good in while I am exercising. I LOVE the memory foam support inside of these and I wear them pretty much every single day. The only bad thing that I can say is that I wish I would have found these sooner because they are amazing! You can purchase them at your local Skechers or click over to their website to order.

ISLAND LIFE IN SKECHERS

One of our Skechers interns had a really unique childhood… she grew up on the tiny island of Catalina off the coast of Southern California (approx. 4,000, with fewer than 500 people in the town where she grew up)! We asked her to share her experiences growing up on this nearby but remote getaway, and learned how her family’s Skechers styles play a big role in their day-to-day lives off the mainland.

Two Harbors, Catalina Island

All my life I’ve lived off the coast of California on the little island of Catalina. And the biggest necessity of my life has been comfort. The residential areas (a tiny city and an even tinier town) are built along the sloping terrain, making getting anywhere quite a feat for our feet.

We islanders walk (or run since island time doesn’t always follow schedule) basically everywhere. We walk for exercise, to work, to the singular grocery store, and then back home at the end of the day. We need shoes that can do it all. For me, those shoes are Skechers.

My family has been Skechers fans since the beginning. I wear Skechers anywhere I go: the beach, college, during a casual out-and-about. Other shoes squeeze my toes and rub my heels the wrong way leaving my feet covered in bandages. Skechers give me room to breathe and simply feel good to wear in general with their memory foam soles.

My parents operate at two different ends of the work spectrum. Although my mother has a short commute to the harbor office (a five-second walk across the beach) she’s always either donned her Skechers GOrun sneakers or athletic sandals. She says the comfortable nature of the shoes, as well as the bright, fun colors, is a must while she caters to the boaters at her window.

My father operates in a more hands-on job with power tools, machines, and such. Over the past two decades he has worn nothing but Skechers’ work boots because they’re the ideal combination of durability and, of course, comfort. Day after day, he put them through the ringer but they keep on keeping on.  He even keeps a spare pair in his closet so he never has to worry about being without his brand.

Avalon, Catalina Island

There was one occasion when I was visiting Avalon (the tiny city) and off the express boat saunters a dressed up woman with a huge black sunhat flopping about her head – but what struck me was the fact that she had high heels on. Now I hold nothing against heels, they’re quite fashionable – but these were tall, pointy-toed and undoubtedly uncomfortable. And on an island like ours, I wondered if she would be more comfortable in a pair of Skechers GOwalk or Reggae sandals.

Skechers are fashion-forward, vibrant, tough as nails, versatile, and most importantly comfortable. And for island life, they’re a personal go-to shoe.

SKECHER STREET HITS THE STREET

Meet Skecher Street Los Angeles: an edgy, new sneaker collection inspired by the urban street scene. Designed in LA, the collection takes the hottest shoe trends and wraps it into a fresh new footwear line (an amazing idea, we think).

Skecher Street’s Uplift – Wild Thang casuals in Zebra and Leopard.

In line with the season’s leading fashion trends, Skecher Street delivers sneakers, platforms and fashion trainers with premium metallic finishes, sophisticated takes on glimmer embellishments and playful embroidered pairs with star and graphic elements. We love how every style is unique, but can also be worn all the time and complement any look.

We’re so thrilled that fashion editors are into the collection, as well as much adored fashion influencers, including Mel Joy,  Koleen Diaz, Rachel Iwanyszyn of Jaglever, and others. Thanks for the love!

All of Skecher Street’s new styles come with the comfort and cushion you already love from big sis (SKECHERS). Skecher Street even has a patented Rise Fit technology that gives some of their styles more height, but Rise Fit’s contoured barefoot liners feel luxurious and just as comfy as your favorite flat. A great idea, right? Style. Comfort. Confidence. Triple the fun, triple the love. Three times as good.

Skecher Street’s Hi-Lite – Sugar High hi-tops in Off White.

To celebrate Skecher Street’s launch, we took our new styles on a tour of Venice Beach to shoot the collection, and are giving away a couple pairs on Instagram (Indicate which channel). Tell us your favorite Skecher Street style in the IG comments, tag a friend and you can win! Want to shop the line? You’ll find it at skechers.com, leading retailers and Skechers stores.

Follow @SkecherStreetLA to see what LA neighborhood we’ll be hanging out in with our #SkecherStreet style.

READ UP FOR SUMMER

Featured: the men’s Relaxed Fit: Tantric – Salman sandal in Black and the women’s Multi/Black Meditation sandal (at select stores).

***

As amazing as the great outdoors gets during the summer, kicking back with an incredible book can be just as magical! Whether it’s a classic tome or the must-have pulp of the season, there’s no greater way to laze the days away than to get lost in a great story. To celebrate, we collected some of our favorite books as well as the greatest independent bookstores we know.

OUR FAVORITE INDEPENDENT BOOKSTORES

Powell’s Books, Portland – this isn’t so much a bookstore as a literary landmark: the biggest used and new bookstore in the world, it takes up an entire city block, stacked with 3,500 unique sections of one million books. Its convenient location in the heart of downtown Portland’s Pearl District makes it the perfect place to get lost in great stories and ideas. City of Books, indeed!

Strand Book Store, New York City – Head over to Manhattan’s East Village and you’ll find The Strand’s “18 Miles Of Books” – everything from new to used and rare offerings. Hailed by the New York Times as the undisputed king of NYC’s indy bookstores, The Strand’s fame has made it a guest player in movies, TV… even a namecheck in a Steely Dan song!

Weller Book Works, Salt Lake City – Sometimes the charm in a place comes from the people who populate it, and that’s no exception here. A new, used and rare bookstore founded in 1929, the family business continues with legions of followers (now located in historic Trolley Square).

The Elliott Bay Book Company, Seattle – A great selection, relaxed environment and frequent readings, events and clubs make this multilevel bookstore one of Seattle’s most dynamic literary offerings.

The Last Bookstore, Los Angeles – true to the creative spirit of LA, this downtown bookstore is the city’s largest – offering everything from used and new tomes to vinyl, graphic novels, DVDs and local art. A true creative (and let’s face it, tourist) destination for people who are avid about their books, music and more.

Sundance Books and Music, Reno – Want to find your favorite new novel in a grand old mansion? Sundance is the place to go! A totally unique two-story historic house, this awesome store is clearly beloved by its staff and visitors, and perfectly houses everything from books to records, gifts and more.

Pages, Manhattan Beach – Right next to SKECHERS’ headquarters, this cool beach town bookseller offers loads of fiction, nonfiction and kids’ tales, along with gifts and greeting cards.

Here are some great books to get lost in this summer – courtesy of our team!

“I would suggest the following two ideas: 1) Diving into The Opposite of Loneliness: Essays and Stories by Marina Keegan; 2) Rereading the entire Harry Potter series (I don’t do this, but have friends who do).”

– Lena

***

“A few of my favorite books: The Pact by Jodi Picoult; The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins; Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom.”

– Janice

***

1984 by George Orwell. These are interesting times we live in, so I plan on spending a few beach days reading this happy go-lucky novel to keep my mind off the real world because Big Brother and the Cult of Personality certainly isn’t at all relevant today.”

– Gunther

***

“Most of my books happen at bedtime with the kid – and a couple of my current favorites are Tap the Magic Tree and Mix it Up! They’re really fun, interactive stories that really get children engaged on every page.”

– Deanna

“I have two books, sometimes three, going at once. Fiction, non-fiction, and introspective. I just finished Lucky Boy by Shanthi Seharan. So topical (way to close to reality), poignant and well-written. Thoroughly recommend but hold on! So now I’m looking for the next fiction and I think it will be A Separation by Katie Kitamura—it’s smaller (perfect for my work trip this month) and is said to be literary and a thriller (perfect for that long plane ride). As far as non-fiction, John Doe’s Under the Big Black Sun: A Personal History of L.A. Punk.—loving it!”

– Ashley

SHOE HACKS YOU’LL LOVE

For those who love to think out of the box on sprucing up their sneaks and sandals, we have a slew of hacks for you! Whether your shoes are too tight, need a little refresh or you just want to give them a totally new look, these style secrets are a great way to ramp up your shoe game. Read on for easy, fun ways to make your Skechers go the extra mile!

STRETCH YOUR STYLE

Got a pair of sandals that you totally adore, but are a little too tight? Put your socks to work! Slip a thick pair and wear your shoes over them (at home is fine; we’ll keep this look just between us) and your shoes will gradually loosen up over time. Whip off those socks… and your perfectly stretched soles are ready to rock!

The women’s Parallel – Strut sandal in Black.

POWDERPUFF GIRL

Some soles can squeak a little when you walk (not that ours do!)… and the cure-all may be right in your closet! Just shake a little baby powder into your shoes, and it can keep the sound at bay. Plus, baby powder has a nice scent for those who want to freshen up their soles.

The Flex Appeal – Newsmaker sneaker in Aqua for women.

TEA TIME

For shoes that have a little more stink, something as simple as tea bags can do the trick! The below Skech-Knit shoe is great for letting your foot naturally breathe, but for those styles that don’t breathe as well, tea bags are a totally natural alternative to shoe deodorants, and you can make them any scent you please… just raid your kitchen cabinets for your personal favorites, drop a couple dry, unused tea bags into smelly shoes and let them sit for a wonderfully scented solution to old soles.

The men’s Arcade sneaker in Navy.

LOVE TO LACE

Here’s a totally easy way to spruce up your lace-up sneaks, without buying anything at all! Skechers sneakers come with two sets of laces, so you can always go crazy with a new color. Explore new ways to lace up your sneaks – a simple new pattern can give your old soles an entirely new look. It’s especially great for updating kids’ sneaks; invite them to come up their own new designs… they’ll soon be showing them off to their friends at school!

FRAYED NOT

Are your laces getting a little frayed at the edges? Extend their life with a couple pieces of tape from your drawer… just wrap them around the ends, and you’re done! It’s simple and quick – and when you get home, you can always switch them out with your second set of Skechers shoelaces!

MEMORIAL DAY MADNESS

Hike it, swim it, walk it, rock it – it’s Memorial Day! We’re thrilled that summer’s finally here, and are ready to take on the holiday head (and feet) first in style…

In celebration, we asked what our team is up to for the holiday – read on to see where we’re escaping to!

A water ski trip at Lake Tahoe… can’t wait!

   – Vera

Here are some three-day weekend ideas I have done with my family/friends in the past:

1. Joshua Tree National Park – Great camping grounds, I suggest waking up early and watching the sunrise over the rock formations.  Such a beautiful desert landscape.

2. San Diego – nice change in scenery from LA. Quieter and great Mexican food!

3. This is not really a specific destination, but I suggest biking up the coast. Even if the destination is just a couple towns away, it’s still a fun activity to do with a group.

   – Joah

BIG SUR! A quick (ish) trip up the coast to camp, roast marshmallows, hike and go off the grid for a little!!

   – Selena

The great thing about recently moving to Manhattan Beach is truly in fact, the beach! This Memorial Day I am looking forward to spending an extra day with the sand between my toes, breathing in the fresh ocean air.

   – Blake

My only priority this Memorial Day weekend is to sit poolside in Palm Springs and work on my tan while reading a good book. What better way to kick off summer?

   – Amelia

I’m going down to San Diego to enjoy the sun and have a BBQ with a bunch of college friends!!

   – Brooklyn

My weekend plans are to spend all three days at the beach!

   – Rick

Dream weekend:

Take Friday off, depart local airport in a private jet.

Hawaii.. Maui with a side trip to Lanai.

Enjoy the beach, warm water, umbrella drinks, hiking, kona coffee, sunsets and natural beauty with my husband.

Monday… fly home in the private jet.

   – Zoey

My favorite long weekend getaway from LA is up to Los Olivos, CA—a fantastic winemaking destination about two hours away. A few couples rent a big house together and we spend the days visiting all the local wineries, afternoons in the pool and the evenings working the grill to cook tasty dinners. It’s hard to come back on Tuesday!

   – Gunther

Anywhere with water and sunshine! There’s nothing like a long weekend in the sun and a body of water nearby to cool off in.

   – Darya

I really like to do as little as possible!  Maybe BBQ with friends, check out Fiesta Hermosa, go to the beach, but REALLY early – because I hate crowds and traffic.

   – Quinn

My favorite destination for long weekend would have to be Rosarito, Mexico. Any opportunity we get, my family and friends and drive down, just South of the US/Mexico border, and rent a beach house where we relax in the sand and enjoy each other’s company. It’s the perfect getaway without the hassle of traveling long-distances.

   – Selina
