New year, new you! It’s that time again, when many of us make ambitious plans to get in shape. More than a few struggle to stick to it month after month – we all know how hard it is to balance those workouts with everything else going on in our lives! Approach your 2017 fitness goals differently this year and take a look at how some of our team plans to get in shape (and do their best to stay there)!
Joan – Be realistic! I make realistic fitness and nutrition goals like working out 3 times per week
(vs. 5 times) or not eating carbs after 2:00pm Monday through Friday (vs. every day). This way I can try to outdo myself rather than get discouraged by not meeting unrealistic goals.
Matt the Couch Potato – This year I’m going to limit the amount of alcohol I drink since it’s just empty calories. I’m going to get up off the couch and walk around more…. maybe throw down some walking lunges or squats on the way out the door… carry a big water bottle with me all the time to get those crucial 64 ounces a day, minimum… and use it for bicep curls! Just remember to include some healthy moves and choices each day….
Brooklyn – My tips for staying healthy is to eat regularly but don’t eat too much at one sitting. A lot of people eat the most for dinner, but my tip would be to try and keep each meal even; if you need a larger meal, it should be for breakfast or lunch, not dinner.
Also, keeping a consistent workout schedule is key to maintaining a healthy body and mind. Set a goal and make it your priority – the longer you stay on track, the more it becomes a habit or routine and the easier it is to maintain.
Joey – New year, new workout plan. Best tips that help me are to 1) work out with friends and 2) switch it up. Working out with friends not only helps motivate me to go, but creates competition, so I work out a bit harder. By mixing it up, I don’t get bored with the same routines everyday. Also, it is important so your muscles don’t get used to the same exercises.
Lacey – When the days are shortest (and it’s really dark and cold for my 6AM workout days) I’ll go to sleep in my workout clothes so that I have to go when my alarm goes off.
Lola – Find a workout buddy and motivate them to continue with their fitness plan – and vice versa!
Jack – Running in a nice pair of lightweight shoes through the neighborhood around my place is what keeps me going through the holidays.
Pasquel – I try not to pay attention to anyone around me when the gym gets crowded after the new year. I know what I need to do and I’m ready to be awesome. It doesn’t matter what stage of fitness anyone else is at… I’m on a mission for me and me alone!
Dolores – my goal for 2017:
- Sweat 1x a day!
- Only eat until you are full. (eat slowly)
Ruth – my fitness inspo: Drink water as soon as you wake up in the morning. Before coffee or food. Sign yourself up for classes early so it forces you to go and get your money’s worth.
Selina – The get fit tip that has worked best for me is pre-planning, whether it be meal planning or planning out physical activity. I am much more motivated to eat healthy if I have meals ready to go rather than deciding what to eat just before every meal. It makes it easier to get to the gym when outfits are laid out in advance and the gym is planned into my schedule.
Mila – I love Seinfeld’s tip for getting stuff done; it applies to workouts too. Grab a calendar and marker, exercise a little every day and add an X over each day once you’re done. You’ll soon have a chain of Xs, and your only job then is to not break the chain (especially helpful for those times when your enthusiasm fades a few weeks in). It’s great way to stop focusing on the big goals and just stay committed to each and every day.
