MAKE FAMILY DAY MEMORIES

Feel like you need more quality time with those you love? Today is your day! It’s Family Day – an annual event that gives us a chance to refocus on our families. Whether you’re a couple, have a kid (or a pet!) or just want to call your parent or sibling to say I love you, it’s a great reminder (not that you need one) to reconnect with the ones you love.

We asked our crew how they love to spend time with their fam – here are some of their favorite moments:

Something our whole family can do together that we enjoy is stand up paddleboarding. My husband and I each paddle a board and our girls will sit, one on the front of each board. They love to see who can collect the most trash out of the ocean and get up close to the silly, stinky seals.

– Riley

My most fave is to go out to breakfast with my family. Second fave is to watch my kids or spouse compete in a sporting event. Parental/spousal pride and bragging rights!!!

– Kim

Does eating together count?  Free meal!

– Danika

Our family likes to go to the local beaches and spend time with family friends.

– Richard

My kids and I love to go to the climbing gym and race to the top.  It’s great to see Gerri and Joe work so hard – they really love being brave.  When we’re done we all go get some well-deserved ice cream and share our favorite moments of the afternoon.

– Hank

My family and I love surfing together because we can catch party waves where we are all on it at the same time… super fun!

– Joelle

I think the best family time happens in the quieter moments! Sleeping in, breakfast in the backyard, curling up and reading a good book together. We love to go camping as a family too!

ESCAPE TO IRELAND

As summer comes to a close, we’re wrapping up our series of great escapes with the gorgeous country of Ireland! We chose seven Irish cities and towns famous for their history, culture, character, sports and even shopping (perfect for grabbing another pair of Skechers). Read, explore, enjoy!

DUBLIN

The capital of Ireland is the country’s number one tourist destination. Dublin holds so many museums dedicated to Ireland’s history, not to mention it’s also the number one shopping destination with streets upon streets in the city centre and centres like Blanchardstown, Swords, Liffey Valley and Tallaght.

We recommend taking a trip to The National Museum of Ireland if you’re traveling to Dublin. You will learn all about Irish art, culture and natural history. You can also visit the Guinness Storehouse and the Jameson Distillery Bow St. in Dublin to get a true taste of Ireland! And you have to try the fish and chips at the Brazen Head–Ireland’s oldest pub established in 1198.

If you’re not into history or shopping, take a bus out to Dublin Zoo, the largest zoo in Ireland! It’s situated right next to Áras an Uachtaráin, the residence and working headquarters of the Irish President. If you’re lucky, you might even see Michael D. Higgins!

WATERFORD

Take a walk along The Quay River in Waterford (part of the River Suir) and stop off on Broad Street to do a little shopping along your way. The entire city is built on the south bank of the river and the views are great for a few Instagram moments!

After your walk along The Quay, stop off at Waterford Crystal! Waterford Crystal has been around since 1783. You can take a factory tour, watch crystal production, visit their retail store, and, of course, enjoy a nice cup of coffee!

DUNDALK

Dundalk is one for you soccer fanatics! Dundalk FC has won the SSE Airtricity, Premier League for the third season in a row! With matches every other week, we would certainly recommend attending a game!

We’d also recommend taking a trip to Cooley Whiskey Visitor Centre located in Martin’s Bar on the main Dundalk to Carlingford Road. There are whiskey tours and tasting events, but make sure you pre-book!

BELFAST

Skechers Hi-Lites in front of the Titanic exhibit

If you’re taking a trip to Belfast, you must visit the Titanic exhibition! You can check out the shipyard and explore underwater to uncover the true legend of the Titanic in the city where the majestic ship was built and set sail.

You can also visit the Ulster Museum in Belfast to view some of the art, furnishings and costumes of the Renaissance times.

For a true taste of Ireland, take a trip to St. Georges Market on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday. It was built in the 1800’s and is one of Belfast’s oldest attractions.

CORK

There is lots to see and do in Cork, whether you want to visit the Blackrock Observatory, walk through The English Market (Queen Elizabeth visited on her trip here a few years ago), take a tour of the Cork Women’s Gaol (a former women’s prison), or see the Jameson Distillery in Midleton. Take a trip out to one of Ireland’s top tourist destinations, Blarney Castle where you can kiss The Blarney Stone and receive the Irish “gift of the gab.” To take in all of Cork, we would definitely recommend taking the Hop-on Hop-off bus tour.

If sightseeing isn’t your thing, don’t worry! Cork is great for shopping and is full of delicious restaurants and cafes. As Cork is so diverse, you could end up anywhere, so we recommend taking a pair of Skechers with memory foam to keep you going through the day!

CRAIGAVON

Craigavon is located in Armagh in the north of Ireland. Craigavon refers to the space between two towns. The town is built between two man-made lakes. The lakes are surrounded by woodland with walking trails. There is also a water sports centre, petting zoo, golf course and ski slope in the area.

ATHLONE

Athlone in Westmeath is a town on the River Shannon near the south shore of Lough Ree in Ireland. It has the second highest population in the midlands.

There are many hidden gems in Athlone, but we recommend visiting Athlone Castle and Peter & Paul’s Church and taking a walk along the river Shannon.

Athlone Castle is over 5000 years old and is located on the banks of the Shannon. During the summer, it is open seven days a week and is worth the trip.

There is so much to do in Ireland with 32 counties in Ireland and Northern Ireland. And we’ve only mentioned seven, so plan a trip and visit all 32 – we’d recommend making a summer out of it!  And if you need comfortable shoes on your adventure, we actually have 14 Skechers stores open in Ireland so it’s easy to find the perfect pair as you travel!

Hope you enjoyed our summer travel series! Where did you adventure to this summer? Tell us in the comments!

FOUR TIPS FOR THE COLLEGE-BOUND

A member of our team just headed back to college (like many of you)… now a senior, she looks back on her past college years with lots of great experiences under her belt – and four easy tips to make your years just as fun and memorable. Read on for some great advice on how to make the most of your time on campus.

I can’t believe it, but I’m finally back at school for my last year at the University of South Carolina. Saying goodbye to my family in California is always tough, but I have established such an amazing group of friends at school and have come to love South Carolina and think of it as a second home!

Starting a new semester is always refreshing for me because I get to take on the challenge of tackling new classes and figuring out an entirely new schedule, which is always jam packed between classes, internships, teaching fitness classes, and spending time with my friends! I think that it is really important to figure out a routine that works for you, especially at the beginning of a new semester when there is so much going on! Here are some of my tips for starting your semester off on the right foot:

1) Choose classes that are most interesting to you and that are being taught by the best professors, even if that means waking up early for an 8 a.m. class.

2) Write everything down! I always carry around a notebook so that I can jot down assignments, meetings, and other plans that pop up throughout the day. I have definitely forgotten about deadlines in the past, so this is a must-do for me!

3) Schedule time to work out once in a while! I teach classes at my gym, which gives me the opportunity to move my body while focusing on inspiring my peers. Since working out is my job, I am pretty much always wearing comfortable shoes like the Skechers Flex Appeal 2.0 – Bold Move so I can go from class to gym in no time!

4) Always say yes to spending time with friends. It is easy to get caught up in the stress of writing papers and studying for exams, but take advantage of every minute that you have to hang out with the people who know you the best! My friends and I love going on mini road trips on the weekends; nearby Charleston is probably one of our favorite places to go! I love wearing the Skechers Vaso – Flor on fun girls’ weekends because they go with pretty much everything and are comfortable enough to explore new places in!

As a rising senior, I can honestly say how quickly college flies by! Take advantage of every opportunity; there will be tons. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes and fail; those mistakes and failures will teach you so much more than acing an exam or winning an award ever will. Lastly, remember to have fun!

What wisdom have you gathered during your school years? Share your best memories with us!

Milwaukee, Wisconsin

Skechers and Rogan’s Shoes paired up to give BOBS from SKECHERS shoes and books to local Milwaukee children, courtesy of COA Youth & Family Centers. After getting their new shoes, children got to customize them at decorating stations!

Skechers returned to the Northwest for our latest account parntership: joining Fred Meyer to give BOBS shoes to local Portland children, courtesy of Oregon DHS Child Welfare Agency!

New York and Maryland

The Sunrise Day Camp event has become a beloved annual tradition for Skechers. Our team donated BOBS from SKECHERS to children fighting cancer at Sunrise Day Camps across New York – from their Long Island, Pearl River and Staten Island locations to their Horizon Day Camp in Baltimore.

A huge thanks to all of you for supporting the BOBS movement over the years! Want to make a difference for animals? You can purchase BOBS for Dogs and BOBS casuals, and your purchase will help save the nearly four million dogs and cats killed in America’s shelters every year. Take a look at the BOBS collection here.

BACK TO SCHOOL IN SKECHERS WITH MEGHAN JOY YANCEY

We’re entering Back To School 2017 with a special, unique POV on how to get it done: mom and homeschooler of five, Meghan Joy Yancey! Read on to see how she navigates this busy season with humor, fun and style.

We are heading into our 5th year of homeschooling and we are nearing that beautiful back-to-school time again. My husband works in education as an assistant principal at a private school but we have chosen to homeschool our children during this season of life. We have five kids who are ages 8, 7, 5, 3 and 20 months. Our “Back to School” might look very different from the traditional type, but it works pretty well for us. I’m going to share a few tips and tricks with you for how we do “Back to School.”

#1  Because of our homeschooling schedule, I have the luxury of waiting for the back-to-school madness to pass before I hit the supply store. We schedule our homeschool year around my husbands’ school schedule, so we have the same days off that he does. And I make sure to have enough supplies on hand so I can start school with last year’s supplies and head to the store once the BTS rush is over. A laid-back trip through the aisles with our shopping cart while Mama sips on a chai tea! If you can hack it, wait a few weeks for a more stress-free shopping experience (you may even find some good deals).

#2  The kids are always seeing other kids get new clothes for school and they always desire some new digs as well. They don’t have any sort of dress code (obviously) and although some days are spent in their pajamas, we most often like to get ready for the day and also have our own adventures/field trips to explore. They each get to pick out their own awesome Skechers shoes to complete their wardrobes and roll into the new school year with style. They each have their own unique styles and rock them fiercely. I love to see how they mix and match their outfits to go with their shoes, and being able to let them explore their style is a joy on its own. This year, their top picks were Energy Lights and Energy Lights – ElipticTwinkle Toes: Shuffles – Twist N TurnsSkech-Lite – Lil Critter and Skech-Trax (we treated ourselves to Classic Cup – Buckner and Canal casuals as well)!

#3  We have created a special place in our home where our studies are done. (We call it our homeschool room, but find your own name that tickles your fancy and say it with pride!) Our room is peaceful, bright and organized. We have it strategically decorated with motivating décor and signs. There are windows lining one whole wall so they get to feel the sun shining in. They each have their own drawers to store their schoolwork and a place for studying. We keep it very tidy so they learn how to have a nice work space and focus on their tasks. Now, I have little ones running around all day as well and that can allow for some distractions. I keep a few toys on hand to keep them occupied during our school hours. Creating your child’s own quiet space can be so fun to design, and they really look forward to going to “their” spot.

#4  We really cherish our time together in the evenings. It is time we set apart to talk and grow together. Every single night, we purpose to sit down to a home-cooked meal and eat together. We each talk about our highs and lows of the day and it gives us great opportunity to stop all the hustle and bustle and hear about each other’s day. Rejoicing in the highs together and learning how to grow through the lows. We get updated on Daddy’s day at work while he was away, and also share our own experiences at home. Being able to rest at the end of the day and catch up as a family is so crucial. And each child feels like he or she is being heard. So, if they do have jitters or are apprehensive about something with summer ending and school starting back up again, there is always a chance to speak about it.

#5  Prepare for the next day. Before you go to bed that night, make preparations for the next day. For us, that might mean setting out lesson plans. For others, that might mean packing up lunches. Whatever it is, set yourself up for success in the morning. And if at all possible, rise before the rest of the house does. Give yourself some time to wake up, have some alone time and get charged up for the day ahead. It is a gift to be alive and healthy and strong, so live the day to the fullest. Maybe you need to go for a quick jog? Slap on your sneakers and get your heart pumping. Maybe you enjoy spending time getting ready in the morning. Put on the pretty fall dress and adorable wedges and take on the day! You’ve got this.

And there you have it. Back to School jitters don’t have to be overwhelming. Stop and smell the roses. Go for a walk in some kick-butt new sneaks and enjoy the beauty around you. Plan ahead, be prepared, stay chill and enjoy the journey, my friends.

Meghan and her husband, Seborn, live in Minneapolis, Minnesota with their 5 children. She homeschools while running a few businesses from home. Meghan runs her blog over at www.meghanjoyyancy.com and is currently writing her first book. She enjoys spontaneous adventures, creating art with her hands, and a random dance party almost every day. You can follow along for some daily encouragement on Instagram, @meghanjoytoday.

What’s your annual back-to-school plan (and which Skechers Kids styles are on your list)? Tell us in the comments!
