COOL WEATHER FITNESS WITH BROOKE BURKE-CHARVET

Fall is upon us and I have been working on my winter belly all year LOL!

Most people are cramming in fitness routines to get bikini ready for summer but I like to stay fit every season. The colder it gets outside the better it feels to bring in the heat. Increasing your fitness commitment can help balance the decadence of the holiday season. We all know that the holidays bring on more social commitments, celebrations, and high caloric festivities.

Here are a few things that I do to manage it all, stay in top shape, and still be able to squeeze in to my New Year’s eve dress:

  • Drink a ton of water, and by that I mean consume a lot more water than your festive cocktails. BTW, hydrating will also help flush out high sodium yummies.
  • Partner up!  Training with friends keeps you committed, honest and laughing through the sweat!  Check out this sneak peek of a scene from my new fitness project–the Brooke Burke Body Fitness app that launches December 1st.  Join me on my fitness journey around the globe to see how easy it is to make it happen anytime, anywhere.
  • Increase your cardio, the more calories you burn the more fat you blast!!! If it’s too cold outside for active outdoor activities, then take an indoor class. I have always believed that cross training is super important. High-impact aerobics are my personal favorite; if you’re not sweating you’re just not working out hard enough. I also love group spinning and taking different types of classes with my girlfriends.
  • Hot yoga is beneficial on many levels far beyond body. One thing that I highly recommend to help manage the holiday madness is taking time out to breathe, relax, and get centered. Not only is stretching one of the best things I know that we can do for our body, even a five minute Shavasana can turn your whole day around.
  • I am really into home workouts. Being stronger than your excuses will allow you to figure out ways to stay fit even in the privacy of your own living room. BTW, if you follow me on social media, I share many tips and tricks that will help you tone and tighten at home. There are plenty of workouts available for FREE on YouTube and short little secrets on Instagram.
  • Yes, you can find tools to help with a workout anywhere–a chair can turn into training equipment at home.  Here’s me behind-the-scenes shooting for my Brooke Burke Body Fitness app in my backyard in Malibu. It’s my “No Excuses” philosophy at work!
  • Last but not least, one of the best ways I know to burn calories and have fun doing it is to dance the night away! If you’re really smart, you’ll kick off those stilettos and slide on your Skechers for your own cardio party!

HEAD TO SET WITH BROOKE BURKE-CHARVET

We absolutely adore Brooke Burke-Charvet. She’s been a beloved member of the Skechers family for years, and she handles everything with such grace and style – whether it’s her role as our ambassador, a contestant on The Celebrity Apprentice, or as a busy mom of four (plus she has an amazing stash of incredible tips we love).

Brooke’s numerous Skechers product shoots have taken us all over the city, and her new Skech-Knit commercial was our most modern yet: shot in an ultra-swanky downtown LA space to highlight the futuristic feel and comfort of the new collection. Brooke, like always, was a delight to shoot – and ready to share her own personal take on what makes her a Skechers solemate and how she balances everything in her life:

Brooke is a huge believer in taking it easy at home in her Skechers – and looking at her new Skech-Knit – Galaxies shoes, it’s clear why. They come with a flat knit mesh fabric that literally fits like a sock on your feet – plus they come in every color imaginable. (Kind of like wrapping your feet up in a blanket all day – sign me up!!)

BACK TO SCHOOL WITH BROOKE BURKE-CHARVET

School supplies… new clothes… and of course, the latest Skechers styles for school! As we prep our kids for BTS, we thought we’d get some tips from one of our favorite moms: Brooke Burke-Charvet. The busy Skechers ambassador, fitness guru, entrepreneur and mom of four tells us how she manages the BTS frenzy with her big brood, and what it takes to juggle school with everything else on her plate.

The new school year is here!  Do you have any tips on how to prep for the chaos that surrounds back to school?

bye-bye-summer-igI think it’s important to get really organized.  You have to try to gradually get your children back into a routine – including bedtimes. I like to do a lot of shopping online. Of course, I have all of the Skechers lined up for fall! I also set goals during the summer so the kids aren’t cramming and trying to develop new habits in the chaos of back to school; they read a couple chapters a day from easy, age-appropriate books. I think one of the keys is finding material that children can respond to, that they’re personally interested in. We also make it family time – I get into bed and read at night while my children are reading beside me, which makes it more enjoyable.

How do you make sure that your kids balance their activities with their schoolwork?

I’ve learned to listen to each child and make adjustments along the way. My son plays soccer, baseball and basketball and he’s able to manage that – but he’s going into third grade, so it’s a little bit easier at that stage in life. My nine-year-old’s a dancer, and there have been semesters in her life where she’s had to put her practice on hold to keep up with schoolwork. With my teenagers, it’s a matter of the homework and school load, and finding that balance with extracurricular wishes. I don’t ever like to have my kids overly stimulated. I like to figure out what’s just enough for them so they can manage their school load. It’s really about finding that sweet spot of balance for each child, and it’s different for all of them.

Any tricks that you use at home to keep the kids organized?
One of the great things that I learned from an elementary school teacher and have used since my older daughter was in second grade is a homework box. It’s great for young kids, and it’s really simple. You get a box and you put all of the school supplies in there, everything from glue to scissors to crayons to pencils and markers – anything a child needs at that particular age. So when they sit down to do their homework, they pull out the box, have all their supplies, and they’re not getting up five times. There are no distractions. And it’s been so helpful. It encourages them to be self-sufficient and get organized.

whiteboardI also just painted my daughter’s wall with whiteboard paint so that she can write out all of her schedules – we painted a certain area and she’s got dry erase markers so she can schedule and add little reminders, which eliminate all the post-it notes.

As a working mom, I use a weekly tear-away calendar pad that I love – it’s basically a big seven-day calendar because I feel like with monthly calendars, you can’t fit in much stuff.  On Sunday night, I map out everyone’s schedule for the week: times, school, drop off, pick up, who’s doing what – it’s usually me when I can, but without that visual list, the household cannot run properly.

On Saturday night, I tear the last week off, throw it away and start a new week. It’s a tear-away pad that stays at home, but it’s big enough that I can organize everything on there.

You’re a fitness icon for a lot of women. Do you share your love of fitness with your kids?

Yes, I really do believe in family fitness. And I try to lead by example. My oldest daughter is a varsity cheerleader which takes up a lot of time, but it gives her a sense of loyalty and leadership at school, so that’s really great. Two of my daughters dance. My son plays every sport. My nine-year-old rides horses. It’s really about figuring out what’s enough, what’s too much – and introducing them to a lot of different things.

You come up with simple but fantastic ways to stay organized.

One of my favorites is that I set the breakfast table at night before I go to bed. It helps because with tired kids, nobody can make a decision in the morning, and we’re all rushing. I set it up at night and figure out what everybody wants – that way, I know they’re starting their day out right with a great breakfast. Some days it might be a smoothie on the road when we’re on the go, so I’m at least getting some nutrition in – but on a good day when the table’s set the night before and I know what everybody wants, it’s one less thing for me to do. I can get up a little earlier and get them set up.

Speaking of food, how do you pack healthy school lunches?
It’s really tricky. I try to pack the good part of the lunch boxes the night before. I do healthy snacks, but also let them have something enjoyable, because every kid wants something yummy that someone else is packing. I have a snack drawer with packaged goods because you can only do so much, it has to be convenient – so maybe it’s healthy chips, a protein bar, granola bar, popcorn, seaweed – but it’s easy stuff they can grab. They get one of those, and they choose a fruit.

final-1Some days, I make chicken fried rice, a sandwich on whole wheat bread, or even chicken taquitos that I heat up in the morning and put in heat-saving containers. Every mom knows that half the stuff comes home anyway. Don’t throw it away, bring it home! If it comes home, I know you didn’t dig it. If you throw it away and your bag comes home empty, I’m clueless as to what you do and don’t want. I think the most valuable thing to being successful as a parent is communication: talking, tweaking and listening. We don’t get the information we need unless we ask the right questions.

I also have a little snack bag or cooler in my car for drinks and snacks. Every mom knows you pick up a starving child from school – I don’t care what they’ve eaten or what you’ve packed for them, they are cranky and they are hungry. Hangry is one of my favorite terms… there is nothing worse than a hangry mom and a hangry child! So I always have something like popcorn, nuts, a bar. And drinks like a cold ice tea or a lemonade to hydrate them.

How do you connect with your kids after a long day at school?

One of the things I’ve learned about raising older kids: you pick them up, you haven’t seen them all day, you’re dying for a conversation, you ask them a bunch of questions, and you get completely shut down or blown off. I used to wonder, what’s up with that? I’ve learned to pick up my older children, not say a whole lot and let them decompress. Like, hi – how was your day. Stop, listen, wait. The truth is that teenagers need a moment to let go of the stress of their day. And when my daughter has decompressed for a moment, she’ll engage. Just hitting the pause button and being patient and being more open to listening than drilling is really helpful.

With little ones, we use dinner as a time to connect. We’ll play a little game like “tell me the worst part of your day and the best part of your day.” Because if you just say “What did you do at school?” it’s so vague. If I can tap into specific questions with my kids later in the day, they love to share something crazy, something quirky, something terrible, something amazing. They love that. And that really inspires conversation. So creative questions help get our dialogue going.

Huge thanks to Brooke Burke-Charvet for all of her great advice! What techniques do you use to get your kids back to school?

SKECHERS Announces Celebrity Hosts for Fourth Annual Pier to Pier Friendship Walk Presented by Nickelodeon: Tommy Lasorda, Brooke Burke-Charvet and Denise Austin support children with special needs and education

SKECHERS USA, Inc., a global leader in lifestyle product and innovator of performance footwear, today announced that legendary Hall of Fame baseball manager Tommy Lasorda, Dancing with the Stars co-host Brooke Burke-Charvet, and fitness expert Denise Austin will host the fourth annual SKECHERS Pier to Pier Friendship Walk on Sunday, October 28. Each celebrity shares a long history with SKECHERS; Lasorda – a loyal friend of the Company for many years – will appear in a new SKECHERS ad campaign later this fall, and both Burke-Charvet and Austin have supported the Company’s footwear collections as celebrity endorsees.

SKECHERS is anticipating 10,000 participants at this year’s Pier to Pier Friendship Walk, which is presented by Nickelodeon, and will aim to surpass the $600,000 fundraising total from 2011. Since its 2009 launch, the walk has raised $1.2 million to help retain vital educational programs, maintain smaller class sizes, upgrade school technology, as well as support The Friendship Circle – a non-profit organization that assists children with special needs and their families through one-on-one peer mentoring and social programming.

“We are thrilled that Tommy, Brooke and Denise are hosting this year’s walk and devoting their time to help the SKECHERS Foundation raise awareness and funds for these important causes,” said SKECHERS president Michael Greenberg. “Schools rely on this additional funding to maintain valuable programs that are constantly threatened by budget cuts, and the Friendship Circle creates a life-changing environment that not only helps children with special needs, but also influences teen volunteers to become caring mentors who give back to the community. These children are the future of our nation, so it’s crucial that we step up and provide the financial support they need to succeed.”

“When I participated in last year’s SKECHERS Pier to Pier Friendship Walk, it made such a dramatic impact on me that I was compelled to return this year and show my support,” said Brooke Burke-Charvet. “These kids are truly inspiring, and watching them join together to save our schools and support children with special needs is such a great example for other communities across the country. I hope people recognize what SKECHERS has accomplished through the Pier to Pier Walk, and it compels them to show support for this important cause at a national level.”

Traveling from the Manhattan Beach Pier to Hermosa Beach Pier and back, the 3.4-mile walk will include performance from local school bands, cheerleading teams and free activities for the entire family. The Pier to Pier Walk will also be followed by the 22nd annual World Famous Pumpkin Races at the Manhattan Beach Pier.

Individuals, families, team leaders and team members can register online at skechersfriendshipwalk.com or by mail for $25. Registration at the Manhattan Beach Pier on the morning of the event is $30. Registered participants will receive a commemorative SKECHERS Pier to Pier Friendship Walk t-shirt, goody bag and complimentary water and drinks along the walk route. For those who cannot participate, donations will also be accepted until the day of the walk; event sponsors and volunteers are also welcome to participate.

Fitness Friday with Brooke Burke!

Brooke Burke and her BFF and hairdresser at the 2011 SKECHERS Pier to Pier Friendship Walk in Manhattan Beach, California.

Hey SKECHERS Fans, it’s that busy time of year again, with lots of parties, lots of food and hardly any time! This holiday season, I’m all about working out more to balance the decadence of the holiday festivities. Try to knock out your workouts in the morning so you have the rest of your day for family and fun, energized for all the celebrating ahead! I just heard a medical study that Americans put on seven lbs. between Thanksgiving and New Years, and they only take off four lbs. of it in the new year – my goal is to stay fit and defy the odds!

With a hectic work schedule and busy household, it’s not always easy to make time for yourself, let alone the gym. Bring A-List Trainer, Greg Joujon-Roche into the privacy of your own home – let’s do it together this year, you and me. I promise I can change your body.

Do you have a good friend that will hold you accountable for your workouts, but keep you laughing at the same time? Having a workout buddy really helps to keep you on track and stay motivated. It’s great to watch yourself and your loved ones reach their fitness goals.

I know a lot of you are waiting until January 1st to start your new fitness regimen, but who needs New Year’s Resolutions? Let’s start today! Check out my post on my website ModernMom.com called Screw New Year’s Resolutions.

Thanks SKECHERS for letting me host Fitness Friday, can’t wait to see what 2012 holds.

SKECHERS PIER TO PIER WALK RAISES $1.8 MILLION FOR KIDS

The Skechers Pier to Pier Friendship Walk returned this past Sunday, its ninth year… and we had another amazing turnout with record-breaking donations for kids with special needs and our schools. More than $1.8 million raised, blowing away our $1.6 million goal!

More than 13,000 people walked pier to pier to support our kids. So many celebrities, from legendary boxer Sugar Ray Leonard and actress, model and entrepreneur Brooke-Burke Charvet, to teens like This Is Us stars Logan Shroyer, Niles Fitch, Parker Bates and Mackenzie Hancsicsak. Special performances by recording artist Asia Monet; NBC’s Little Big Shots’ Kieran Tamondong; America’s Got Talent duo Artyon and Paige; Nickelodeon star Ciara Wilson; dance sensation Larsen Thompson; and actress/singer Jada Facer’s “National Anthem.” And thousands of families and friends and who all came together to support our cause.

Since 2009, our walk has had one goal: to raise funds that support our children. The results have taken shape in countless ways: supporting our amazing Friendship Foundation that encourages kids of special needs to make new friends, engage in new activities and bring people together. A new library that we built for the kids, new technology introduced to educate our children, and much more. And it’s grown far beyond our original goal in amazing ways – from uniting children and communities with a new level of kindness and positivity, to inspiring a sister Friendship Walk in places as far-reaching as China.

Our walk has also become a year-round movement: motivating thousands to take part and contribute every season. Next October’s event will be our 10th year, a huge milestone for us – and participants excited by last Sunday’s event have already hit the ground running with new donations and support. We encourage you to take part and join our movement for making a difference for kids in every community. You can learn more about the SKECHERS Pier to Pier Friendship Walk at skechersfriendshipwalk.com and  facebook.com/SKECHERSFriendshipWalk.

Our profound thanks to all of the companies who sponsored our walk this year, and have made it their business to support our kids: from our headlining sponsor Nickelodeon and media sponsor NBC4 Southern California, to countless sponsors across every industry: Mattel, Moose Toys, The Claudette & Ethan Rickett Care Foundation, Wells Fargo, Ross, Steel Partners, Premier Displays & Exhibits, United Legwear & Underwear Co., Velocity Sports Performance, Vertra, and so many others who give funds and support to provide a better future.

SKECHERS PIER TO PIER FRIENDSHIP WALK RAISES $1.6 MILLION FOR KIDS

_tts4596_copy

It’s been eight years since our Skechers Pier to Pier Friendship Walk started in Manhattan Beach – and we’re so grateful that every year of the walk to date has brought record-breaking donations for children with special needs and schools. This past Sunday, we had our largest attendance yet – 12,000 people – all walking to raise more than $1.6 million for kids.
skechers2016-34

They joined all kinds of celebrities – Brooke Burke-Charvet, Sugar Ray Leonard, Camila Alves, Ian Ziering, Denise and Katie Austin, and Tommy Lasorda; a squad of teen TV and movie stars; and Walk performers Asia Monet Ray, Jordyn Jones, New District and Aidan Prince. Sponsors backing the Walk included lead sponsors Nickelodeon and NBC4 Southern California, and national and local companies from every industry: retail, finance, technology, fitness, foundations and more.

When we look back at our very first Walk, we’re astounded by how it’s grown from a passionate community event into the nation’s largest for kids with special needs and education. In spite of its growth, we’re thrilled to see that it remains the same: the focus continues to be on our kids, and how we can achieve amazing things together to help them thrive.

The Friendship Foundation has been a huge gift for children with special needs and their families, and this year’s funds will continue to support their efforts with programs, peer mentoring, sporting events, and field trips. Education foundations will also be able to improve our schools by retaining teachers and programs, making classes smaller and upgrading facilities and technology. And we continue to provide scholarships to deserving children – $100,000 will be given in 2017. All this is because so many have given so much (an incredible $7 million over the years).
img_0604A huge thanks to everyone who participated this year – and to all of you, who have joined more than 4 million viewers engaged with our cause online. In addition to Nickelodeon and NBC4 Southern California, a grateful shout out to Wells Fargo, Steel Sports, The Claudette and Ethan Rickett Care Foundation, Ross, Zappos.com, Vertra, WSS, United Legwear & Underwear Co., Mattel, Body Glove, Premier Displays & Exhibits, Kids Foot Locker, JAKKS Pacific, Marshalls, Cushman & Wakefield, Caskey & Caskey, Siltanen & Partners Advertising, Continental Development, Northrop Grumman, Equinox, Chevron, and so many others who have provided funds and support to provide a better future for children.

GET ON TREND WITH D’LITES

Can you believe one of the hottest current trends in women’s footwear is a throwback look to the late 90’s that’s now in the midst of its second revival?  Known as D’Lites, these signature Skechers profiles originated with one of our early blockbuster sport styles–the Energy. For anyone in high school two decades ago, the Energy was everywhere.  It could pair with almost any sport casual look. And after a certain mega pop star started wearing them in Skechers advertising, their popularity shot through the stratosphere.

Almost ten years ago the style was updated to be lighter, a bit more sleek–and D’Lites were born.  More recently, fashion cues from the late 90’s started coming back in vogue everywhere, opening the door for yet another revival. It hit first in Asia where last year D’Lites were suddenly seen everywhere once again. And now they’re back on top state-side too.  We profiled D’Lites as perfect normcore styles last spring, but the trend has since extended well beyond that niche look. The chunky heel gives you a little extra height and now with a soft Air-Cooled Memory Foam insole they’re more comfortable than ever. Whether you’re hanging out, chilling out, or going out, the distinct D’Lites profile will perfectly complement your easy going personality. We all know the irony and struggle of working the effortless casual look is that sometimes we have to put a lot of work into it! With D’Lites it’s just easy.

Our friends around the globe love sending us shots of their D’Lites out in the world. Check these out for some more ideas on how easy it can be to style your next pair of D’Lites.

Skechers loves Brooke Burke-Charvet and she gushes over the comfort found in D’Lites in her newest commercial. Check it out below and let us know in the comments how you would style your perfect pair of D’Lites!  And if you don’t have a pair, head to the store now!
