What do you recommend for taking care of your shoes in the rain and the snow? How do I know what shoes are right for what conditions?
Tim the Shoe Guy says:
When the weather starts turning rainy or snowy, don’t forget to pre-treat your leather, suede and fabric shoes so they keep your feet dry and stay looking their best.
For suede shoes and boots especially, we recommend at least one full application of a suede specific “rain and stain” spray treatment. Suede can discolor when it gets wet, so pre-treating your new suede boots is highly recommended.
Smooth leather usually repels a light rain, but if it’s pouring, or you’re walking in snow, you’ll want to protect your smooth leather shoes and boots too. There are many fine leather “rain and stain” treatments available. Don’t forget to clean your smooth leather after walking in snowy streets, as the salt used to de-ice sidewalks can stain leather shoes.
Fabric and synthetic shoes or boots, especially water-resistant or seam-sealed rain boots, are often ideal for wet weather, but if you’re not sure if your footwear is waterproof, giving them a treatment with a fabric protector like Scotchgard™ is a great idea. We don’t advise using heavier silicone sealing treatments because it will prevent your footwear from being able to breathe.
When the temperatures drop, we recommend getting boots or shoes with insulation to keep your feet nice and warm, like faux fur-lined shoes or boots with 3M™ Thinsulate™ insulation. Skechers makes lots of different warm and snuggly shoe and boot options to ensure you make it through the chilly temperatures with warm, dry feet.
